8월18일은 김대중(1924-2009.8.18.) 전 대통령님의 15주기이다. 나(문일석=브레이크뉴스 발행인)는 김대중 전 대통령님과 각별(各別)한 인연을 가진 기자 중의 한 명이었다.
김대중 전 대통령님은 야당 지도자 시절부터 대통령일 때까지 언론인들(언론기관)과 회견(會見)을 가져 왔는데, 주로 편집국장급만 상대하는 게 특징이었다.
나는 주간신문인 ‘토요신문’-‘일요서울’-‘주간현대’의 편집국장 출신이다. 거기에다가 인터넷신문인 브레이크뉴스의 발행인으로 있어왔다. 이런 연유로, 최다(最多=제일 많은) 인터뷰어(여기에서 인터뷰라 함은 3시간 이상 긴 시간의, 본격적인 인터뷰를 의미한다.)라는 직함(?)을 얻게 됐다. 긴 연륜, 신문사의 편집국장 자리를 차지하고 있어 얻은 행운(幸運)이었다.
1998년 대통령에 취임한 이후 최초의 청와대 인터뷰어이기도 했다. 1998년 집권 초, 그 당시 청와대공보수석은 박지원 공보수석(현재 더불어민주당 의원)이었다.
필자는 김대중 전 대통령 재식 시 ‘펜 그리고 자유’라는 전국 종합 일간신문을 발행하기도 했었다. 나는 신문사 오너('주간현대' '사건의 내막' '브레이크뉴스' 등의 매체 사주)로서, 김대중 집권 전-후 시대, 신문판매 전성기를 누렸었다. 그러하니, 이래저래 인연이 깊은 셈이다.

나는 김대중 전 대통령의 최다 인터뷰어로서 잊혀 지지 않는 것이, 한 가지 있다. 김대중 전 대통령의 자기 관리다. 1990년대만 해도 기자들이 녹음기를 소지(所持)하는 게 쉽지 않았다. 인터뷰 때, 볼펜과 취재수첩이 전부였다. 취재수첩을 들고 볼펜으로 기록하는 형태의 인터뷰였다. 인터뷰 상대의 말이 빠르면, 중간에 중요한 말을 놓치는 경우도 종종 있을 터이다.
김대중 전 대통령은 인터뷰 이후, 정리된 원고를 보여주라고 요청 했다. 정리된 원고를 보고, 정독(精讀)하면서 교정(校正)을 해줬다. 일종의 ‘자기 관리’라, 할 수 있다. 글자 한 자까지도 관리(管理)하는 분이었다. 대단한 자기 관리자(管理者)라고 평할 수 있다. 그러니까, 대통령 자리까지 갈수 있었다고 생각한다.
DJ가 호남출신으로, 1,000년 만에 권력을 잡(執權)은 비결이 많겠으나, 치밀-치열하게 자기를 관리해온 '자기 관리술'에도 기인한다.
그 분은 떠나고, 이 세상에 계시지 않는다. 그분은 정치인이었다. 나는 그 분에게서 기자가 무언지를 배우며 살아왔다. 자기 자신과 관련된 글자 한 자까지도 챙기는 치밀(緻密)함, 여기에서 기자가 무엇을 해야 하는 지를 배웠었다. 김대중 전 대통령님, 그립다. 오랜 연륜, 기자였던 나에게, 아주 그리운 분이다.
필자가 쓴 ‘인동초’라는 시가 목포의 김대중 전 대통령 가옥에 비치돼 있다고 한다. 이 시의 전문을 소개한다.

August 18th is the 15th anniversary of the death of former President Kim Dae-jung (1924-2009.8.18.). I (Moon Il-seok, publisher of Break News) was one of the reporters who had a special relationship with former President Kim Dae-jung.
