20일 한국원자력환경공단에 따르면 이번 평가는 원자력안전위원회에서 지정한 16곳의 지방방사능측정소와 공단과 한수원 및 원자력연구원 등 원자력이용시설사업자 12곳, 정부기관 및 방사능분석기관 25곳 등 총 53개 기관이 참석했다.
세부 평가사항을 보면, 토양, 지하수, 바닷물 등 6개 환경 시료에 포함된 전-베타(β), 세슘(Cs)-137 및 삼중수소(H-3) 등 11개의 방사성 핵종을 판별하고 분석하는 것으로 진행되었으며, 5월에 해당 핵종이 포함된 물질을 수령 후 전처리와 분석 등의 과정을 거쳐 8월에 제출한 결과에 따라 최종 등급을 획득했다.
한편, 공단은 경주시 양북면에 입지한 중저준위방사성폐기물 처분시설 주변의 육상과 해상에서 바닷물과 지하수, 어패류 및 농산물 등 24종의 시료를 103곳에서 채취하여, 연간 약 2,440건의 주기적 환경조사로 방사능 누출여부를 면밀히 감시 중이며, 분석결과는 공단 홈페이지를 통하여 일반에 공개하고 있다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 ‘이번 적합등급 획득으로 그간 시행한 분석활동의 정확성을 검증할 수 있었다.’고 밝히며, ‘국내 유일의 방폐물 관리 기관으로 투명한 정보공개를 통해 안전성과 신뢰를 확보해 나가겠다.’고 말했다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Agency Receives Grade A in All Items of Radioactivity Analysis and Evaluation Capability
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (Chairman Seong-don Cho) has received Grade A (suitable) for all nuclides for the 7th consecutive year in the 2024 Radioactivity Analysis Capability Evaluation hosted by the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), a nuclear regulatory agency.
According to the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency on the 20th, a total of 53 organizations participated in this evaluation, including 16 local radioactivity measurement stations designated by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, 12 nuclear power facility operators such as the Agency, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, and 25 government agencies and radioactivity analysis organizations.
Looking at the detailed evaluation, it was conducted by identifying and analyzing 11 radioactive nuclides, including all-beta (β), cesium (Cs)-137, and tritium (H-3), contained in 6 environmental samples including soil, groundwater, and seawater. After receiving the materials containing the nuclides in May, it went through preprocessing and analysis processes, and obtained the final grade based on the results submitted in August.
Meanwhile, the corporation collected 24 types of samples, including seawater, groundwater, fish, shellfish, and agricultural products, from 103 locations on land and sea around the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal facility located in Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju-si, and is closely monitoring the presence of radioactive leaks through approximately 2,440 periodic environmental surveys per year. The analysis results are disclosed to the public through the corporation's website.
Cho Seong-don, Chairman of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency, said, “With this appropriate grade, we have been able to verify the accuracy of the analysis activities we have conducted so far,” and added, “As the only radioactive waste management agency in Korea, we will continue to secure safety and trust through transparent information disclosure.”
