시는 2020년 수립한 공공디자인 진흥계획(2020~2024년)에 따라 지난 5년간 지역 특성을 반영한 표준디자인을 개발하고 다양한 공공디자인 교육을 진행하는 등 공공디자인의 저변을 확대하기 위해 노력해 온 점에서 높은 점수를 얻었다.
‘범죄예방 환경디자인(Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, CPTED)’과 ‘디자인 나눔 프로젝트’ 등 생활 속 안전을 강화하는 공공디자인을 개발·운용해 심사위원들의 호평을 받았다.
시는 지난해 심각한 불법 주정차로 화재 발생 시 소방차가 진입하기 어려운 처인구 유림동과 기흥구 신갈동, 수지구 풍덕천동 등 3곳에 생활안전디자인이 적용된 비상벨 64개와 안심귀갓길 표지판 23개, 비상소화장치함 5개, 분리수거함 4개 등을 설치했다.
또 안전한 도시환경을 조성하기 위해 지역 내 대학교의 디자인 전공학부와 협업해 범죄에 취약한 하천이나 골목 안길에 시인성을 강화한 범죄예방 환경디자인 안내판 등을 적용했다.
어두운 골목길이나 교량 하부에 로고젝터를 설치해 위급 시 신고하기 쉽도록 해당 장소 주소를 알려주거나 밝고 화사한 그림, 다정한 문구 등을 비추도록 한 것이다.
시는 또 탄천의 수지구 죽전동 대지교부터 기흥구 언남동 구성1교까지 약 4km 구간과 용인중앙공원(처인구 남동)에 종합안내판이나 출구 정보, 산책로 이용 시 주의 사항, 금연 안내 등 27개의 ‘길찾기 안내 사인 표준디자인’을 개발, 설치했다.
문화체육관광부는 지난해부터 ‘대한민국 공공디자인대상’에 지방자치단체 부문을 신설해 우수한 지자체를 선정해 시상하고 있다. 주요 평가지표는 공공디자인 행정서비스와 제도, 공공디자인 인력, 공공디자인 사업 추진 실적 등이다.
