윤석열 대통령이 4일 인도·태평양지역 핵심 파트너 뉴질랜드 크리스토퍼 럭슨 총리와 정상회담을 갖고 지난 2006년 체결된 양국 간 '21세기 동반자 관계'를 '포괄적 전략 동반자관계'로 격상키로 합의했다.
대통령실에 따르면 윤 대통령은 이날 오전 용산 대통령실에서 방한 중인 럭슨 총리와의 한·뉴질랜드 정상회담에서 상호 실질 협력 강화·지역 및 국제무대 협력 증진 방안 등을 논의하며 이같이 합의했다.
럭슨 총리 방한은 지난해 11월 취임 후 처음으로 뉴질랜드 총리의 양자 회담차 한국 방문도 지난 2015년 3월 존 키 총리 방한 이후 9년 만이다. 양 정상 간 만남은 지난 7월 미국 워싱턴DC 나토(NATO·북대서양조약기구) 정상회의 이후 약 2개월 만이다.
한·뉴질랜드는 지난 2015년 자유무역협정(FTA) 발표 후 꾸준히 교역을 확대하는 등 경제 분야 협력도 강화하고 있다.
양 정상은 이날 회담에서 상호 긴밀한 유대를 인식하고 무역 및 경제 협력·과학·교육 및 인적 교류 협력·국방 및 안보 협력·지역 및 국제 협력 분야 등에서 교류 및 협력을 강화키로 했다.
특히 북한의 지속적 핵·미사일 개발과 러·북 간 군사협력을 강력 규탄하고, 북한 비핵화와 북한 내 인권 증진을 위해 협력해 나가기로 했다.

양 정상은 지난 6월 양국 해군이 시행한 록키위(ROKKIWI) 연합 대잠훈련과 뉴질랜드 아오테아로아함의 부산 기항 등 양국 간 군사협력을 평가 후 경제 안보 분야 도전·기회 등 논의를 위해 정례적 '양자 경제안보대화'를 출범키로 했다.
또 내년이 한·뉴질랜드 자유무역협정(FTA) 10주년임을 고려해 양자 무역·투자를 증진하면서 상호 호혜적 결과 달성을 목적으로 '한·뉴질랜드 FTA' 개선 가능성을 모색키로 했다.

양 정상은 과학·교육·인적 교류 협력 분야 경우 민간 주도 우주산업을 함께 육성하면서 자연재해 대응을 위한 국가재난관리기관 간 협력 강화 방안을 논의키로 했다.
또 다양한 장학금 제도 수혜 대상을 확대키로 하면서 워킹홀리데이 프로그램이 양국 청년이 정기적으로 교류할 수 있는 플랫폼을 제공하고 있는 것에 주목했다.
럭스 총리는 한국 정부의 북한 비핵화 로드맵 '담대한 구상'과 비핵화된 자유·평화·번영의 통일 한반도를 이룩하기 위한 '8·15 통일 독트린'에 대해 지지를 표했다.
