당진시, 탄소중립도시 전환 청신호

충남 당진시가 환경부와 국토부에서 공동으로 추진하는‘탄소중립 선도도시’공모사업에 1차 선정됐다고 5일 밝혔다.

당진시는 정부의‘기후위기 대응을 위한 탄소중립·녹색성장 기본법’에 따라, 환경부와 국토교통부가 공동으로 추진하는 탄소중립 선도도시에 사업계획서를 제출했다.

지난해 예비후보지로 지정된 전국 39개 기초지자체 중 우수한 성적을 기록한 당진시는 서울노원, 경기광명, 경기평택, 경기과천, 충남보령, 전남순천, 전남신안, 경북포항, 경북구미, 경북상주, 경남창원, 제주특별자치도 등 12개 기초지자체와 1차로 선정됐다.

당진시에는 대규모 화력발전소와 제철소가 있어 전국에서 탄소가 가장 많이 배출되는 지역으로 탄소중립 사회로 전환이 가장 시급한 지역이다.

이에 당진시는‘탄소중립을 당기는 당찬 당진’이라는 비전으로 2030년까지 지역 탄소 배출량 약 56% 이상 감축하기 위한 신재생에너지 보급 확대 ,탄소중립 인프라 조성 ,탄소흡수원 확충 등의 내용으로 국가 탄소중립 목표 달성에 기여하고자 지역 특색을 담아 사업계획서를 제출했다.

당진시는 오는 10월 예정인 2차 경진대회에서도 탄소중립 선도도시로 최종 선정될 수 있도록 철저한 준비를 기한다는 방침이다.
