Online black market trading of professional sports tickets skyrockets..'Joonggonara' is the most
It was revealed that the number of online black market tickets reported for professional sports has increased 8.2 times compared to 5 years ago.
According to the ‘Status of Online Black Market Ticket Reports for Professional Sports in the Past 5 Years’ data submitted to Min Hyung-bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the number of black market ticket reports as of August this year was 51,405, an 8.2-fold increase from 6,237 cases 5 years ago. The number is expected to increase further when the number of reports from the second half of the year, which have not been counted, is added.
As the online black market ticket issue emerged as a serious social problem, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism signed a business agreement with the National Police Agency in 2019 to establish a healthy ticket purchasing culture and has been operating the ‘Professional Sports Online Black Market Ticket Report Center’ since 2020.
As a result of analyzing 164,838 total reports over the past five years, the number of reports received during the KBO regular season and postseason was 126,106 and 32,919, respectively, accounting for 96.5% of the total. More than 9 out of 10 reports were about black market tickets for professional baseball.
Next were KOVO with 3,429, KBL with 1,255, and K League with 1,127.
Among black market tickets traded on second-hand trading platforms, 11,989 out of 33,766 reports (39.5%) were made through Joonggonara, the most.
This was followed by Beongaejangteo with 5,837 reports (19.2%), Carrot Market with 5,728 reports (18.9%), Ticket Bay with 2,974 reports (9.8%), and Twitter with 2,772 reports (9.1%).
The problem is that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is lukewarm in its response to eradicating online black market tickets. Since the launch of the ‘2020 Professional Sports Online Ticket Reporting Center,’ there has not been a single case in which the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requested the police to investigate. It was found that most of them were only sent out as warnings.
In response to this, Rep. Min said, “The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is belatedly coming up with countermeasures after the National Human Rights Commission recommended a complete ban on ticket trading on the 12th,” and “We will quickly push for revisions to related laws such as the National Sports Promotion Act to resolve citizens’ inconveniences and complaints.”
