20일 화성시 동탄출장소에서 더불어민주당 소속 화성시의회 시의원들과 함께 진행된 간담회서 정명근 시장과 시의원들은 100만 특례시로 성장한 화성시에 과학고가 유치될 경우 화성시의 인재 양성과 도시브랜드 가치를 크게 향상시킬 수 있다는 데 의견을 모았다.
화성시는 최근 5년간 전국 인구 증가 수 1위를 기록하고 있는 역동적인 도시지만, 이에 따른 교육 인프라 확충이 절실한 상황이다.
현재 고등학교에 진학하는 화성시 학생 중 17%인 1,784명이 인근 도시의 고등학교에 배정돼 원거리 통학을 하고 있고 학급당 평균 학생 수가 교육부 기준을 크게 초과하는 과밀학급 문제를 겪고 있다.
이 같은 상항에서 화성시가 유치 노력을 기울이고 있는 ‘경기형 과학고’ 문제 역시 녹록지 않다. 11일 경기도교육청이 ‘경기형 과학고 신규 지정 1단계 예비 지정 공모 계획’을 발표했으나, 화성시가 부담해야 할 학교부지매입비와 건축비·운영비 등과 화성의 학생들에 대한 지역 할당 비중 등이 아무것도 정해지지 않은 상태다.
