브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 이재용 삼성전자 회장이 지난 6일 필리핀 칼람바에 위치한 삼성전기 생산법인을 방문해 MLCC 사업을 점검하고, ‘기회 선점’을 강조했다.
삼성전기 경영진들과 미래 사업 전략을 논의한 후 MLCC 공장을 직접 살펴본 이 회장은 △AI △로봇 △전기차 시장 확대에 따른 기회를 선점할 것을 당부했다.
이후 이 회장은 칼람바 생산법인에서 근무하는 임직원들과 간담회를 갖고 그간의 노고를 격려하며 애로사항을 경청하는 시간도 가졌다.
최근 이 회장은 수시로 △부산 △톈진(中) △수원 등 삼성전기 사업장을 찾아 사업 현황을 점검하며 고부가 MLCC 시장 선점에 박차를 가하고 있다.
1997년에 설립된 필리핀 생산법인은 2000년부터 IT용 MLCC, 인덕터 등을 생산해 왔으나 전기차, 자율주행차 시장이 급성장함에 따라 고성능 전장용 MLCC 추가 생산도 검토하고 있다.
필리핀 생산법인은 2012년 MLCC 제2공장을 준공하고, 2015년에는 2880억원을 투자해 생산라인을 추가 증설하는 등 부산, 톈진(中) 생산법인과 함께 핵심 생산 거점으로 성장했다.
삼성은 부산을 MLCC용 핵심 소재 연구개발과 생산을 주도하는 첨단 MLCC 특화 지역으로 육성하는 한편, 중국과 필리핀은 IT·전장용 MLCC의 글로벌 핵심 공급 거점으로 운영할 계획이다.
MLCC는 전기를 저장했다가 필요한 만큼의 전기를 안정적으로 공급해 반도체가 원활하게 동작하도록 하는 핵심 부품으로 스마트폰, 전기차 등에 사용되며 ‘전자산업의 쌀’로 불린다.

특히, 스마트폰에 IT용 MLCC가 1000개 정도 탑재되는 것에 비해 전기차에는 전장용 MLCC가 3000~2만개가 탑재되고, 가격도 3배 이상 높아 삼성전기는 전장용 MLCC에 사업 역량을 집중하고 있다.
한편, 삼성전기는 지속적으로 현지 CSR 활동을 확대해 2022년 필리핀 정부가 수여하는 ‘최고기업상’을 수상했다.
‘최고기업상’은 필리핀 투자청에 등록된 기업에 수여되는 가장 권위있고 존경받는 상으로, 2012년 제정된 이후 최고기업상을 수상한 기업은 삼성전기를 포함해 5개 기업뿐이다.
