필리핀을 국빈 방문한 윤석열 대통령이 7일(현지시간) "마르코스 대통령 취임 이후 필리핀 경제가 괄목할 만하게 성장하고 있다 들었다"며 "필리핀 산업이 발전하고 경제가 성장하고 안보가 튼튼해지는 게 대한민국 국익과 정확히 부합한다"고 밝혔다.
윤 대통령은 부인 김건희 여사와 함께 이날 오후 필리핀 마닐라 말라카냥궁에서 열린 국빈 오찬에 참석해 이같이 말한 후 "나아가 이것이 역내와 글로벌 평화·번영에도 정확히 부합하는 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
그러면서 "양국 수교 75주년을 기념해 양국이 전략적 동반자 관계를 수립하게 된 건 매우 시의적절하고 정당한 일"이라며 "대한민국 정부·기업들은 필리핀을 더욱 사랑하고 필리핀과 더욱 왕성한 경제·사회·안보 협력을 이룰 것"이라고 했다.
또 "1949년 대한민국은 아시아 국가 중 제일 먼저 필리핀과 외교관계를 수립했고, 불과 1년 뒤 1950년 전쟁이 일어나 북한 공산 세력이 자유 민주국가 남한을 침공했다"며 "필리핀은 아시아에서 가장 많은 병력을 우리에게 파병했고 세계 전사에 남는 율동전투를 승리로 이끌었다"고 말했다.
이어 "한·필리핀은 피로 맺은 우정에 기반해 양국 관계를 발전시켜 왔고, 지금도 필리핀을 찾는 외국인 중 한국인이 연간 145만명으로 가장 많다"며 "과거 우리가 어려울 때 피로써 우리를 지켜주고 도와준 필리핀에 대한 고마움을 잊지 않기 때문이라 생각한다"고 말했다.
페르디난드 마르코스 주니어 대통령은 오찬사에서 "오늘 양국이 발표한 공동선언문을 통해 전략적 동반자 관계를 공식화한 것을 환영한다"며 "필리핀은 한국과 지속 가능한 파트너십을 강화할 의지가 있고 다방면에서 한국과 협력을 심화해 나가길 기대한다"고 화답했다.
이어 "지난 75년간 양국 관계는 다방면으로 확대됐다"며 "서로 공통된 역사·가치를 바탕으로 지속가능한 인도·태평양 지역 미래를 위해 함께 협력할 예정"이라고 밝혔다.
