나는 늘 1980년 이후에 태어난 작가가 노벨문학상을 받을 것이라고 생각했는데 1970년생이 받아서 놀라웠다. 고은 말이 나올 때 난 우리 문학이 아직 그때가 안 되었다고 쓴 바 있다. 이유는 많다.
그런데 한강은 본디 시인이고, 소설이라기에는 시에 더 가깝고, 문장이 시처럼 짧고, 소설보다는 시처럼 내면 심리 묘사에 뛰어나고, 선진국 작가처럼 누구에게도 주눅 들지 않고 어떤 소재든 잡고 물어뜯는 힘이 있다. 또 고약한 한자어가 거의 없이 우리말 90% 이상의 순도 높은 글이라서 오히려 2000년대 생보다 훨씬 더 글을 잘 쓰는 것 같다는 느낌을 받았다.
오늘까지는 우리 국민들이 박수치고 기뻐하겠지만, 아마도 김대중 노벨평화상 때처럼 내일부터는 비난이 몰아칠 것 같다. 이 나라는 김대중도, 한강도 품을만한 자격을 갖고 있지 못하다. 이 말이 무슨 말인지 곧 알게 된다. 여기저기 SNS가 불꽃 튈 것이다. 하지만 우리나라 말고 다른 나라에서는 축하한다는 목소리가 많이 나올 것이다.
나는 소설이 잘 팔리던 시대에도 이런 작품을 쓰지 못했는데, 한강은 10명 중 9명이 책을 안읽는 시대에도 이런 좋은 작품들을 써냈다. 그의 끈질긴 힘이 느껴진다. 앞으로 노벨문학상 바람이 불어 우리 문학이 살아나고, 독서가 살아나길 바란다.
광주항쟁, 제주4.3사건이 다시 이슈가 될 것 같다. 또 패싸움이 일어날 것이다. 하지만 문학은 문학이다. 문학은 문학대로 두고, 너흰 정치로만 싸워주기 바란다.

However, Han Kang is a poet by nature, and his novels are closer to poetry, his sentences are short like poetry, he excels at describing inner psychology like poetry rather than novels, and like writers from advanced countries, he is not intimidated by anyone and has the power to grab hold of any subject and tear it apart. Also, since his writing is pure Korean with almost no annoying Chinese characters and is over 90% Korean, I felt that he writes much better than those born in the 2000s.
Until today, our people will applaud and rejoice, but from tomorrow, just like when Kim Dae-jung received the Nobel Peace Prize, criticism will likely pour in.
