브레이크뉴스 문홍철 기자= 기아는 네덜란드 비영리단체 ‘오션클린업(The Ocean Cleanup)’과의 협업을 통해 해양 폐플라스틱을 활용한 자동차 용품인 EV3 전용 한정판 트렁크 라이너(매트)를 선보인다고 15일(화) 밝혔다.
오션클린업은 플라스틱 없는 바다를 목표로 해양 플라스틱 및 쓰레기 제거 활동을 하는 네덜란드 비영리단체로 기아는 2022년 오션클린업과 지속 가능한 지구를 만들어 나가기 위한 파트너십을 체결하고 해양 폐플라스틱 수거 및 재자원화 사업을 진행하고 있다.
이번에 공개한 EV3 전용 한정판 트렁크 라이너는 세계 최초로 태평양 거대 쓰레기 지대(Great Pacific Garbage Patch)에서 수거한 후 추출한 해양 폐플라스틱으로 만든 차량 용품이다.
오션클린업과의 파트너십 체결 후 처음으로 선보이는 결과물로 기아의 디자인 철학 ‘오퍼짓 유나이티드(상반된 개념의 창의적 융합)’에서 영감을 받아 제작됐으며, 상단 표면 패턴이 파도치는 바다 위에서 그물망으로 수거되는 해양 플라스틱의 모습을 연상시켜, 해양 플라스틱을 수거하는 오션클린업의 활동을 반영하고 있다.
또한, 재활용 해양 플라스틱을 40% 사용했으며 기존 트렁크 라이너만큼 우수한 내구성과 품질을 자랑한다.

한편, 기아는 지속 가능한 모빌리티 분야의 선두주자가 되겠다는 비전을 뒷받침하기 위해 향후 2030년까지 완성차의 재활용 플라스틱 사용률을 20% 이상으로 끌어올릴 계획이다.
이 외에도 차량 폐기 시 기후 영향을 최소화하기 위한 ‘재활용 선순환 체계(Virtuous Recycling Loop)’를 구축하고 활성화해 폐배터리, 플라스틱 등의 재활용률을 높이며 환경 보호에 한층 더 기여할 수 있도록 노력할 방침이다.
