브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 한국마사회 말박물관 다섯 번째 초대전, 박은주 작가의 ‘내 안의 너’가 25일 개최된다.
이번 전시에 최초로 선보이는 ‘지혜의 숲으로’는 18~19세기 우리나라에서 유행했던 ‘책가도(冊架圖)’를 분해한 뒤, 아름답게 장식된 말과 초록의 식물을 더해 새롭게 구성한 가로 444㎝의 대형 작품이다.
‘책가도’란 서책을 중심으로 서가에 진열된 각종 문방구와 골동품, 화훼, 기물 등을 그린 것으로, 책을 사랑한 정조 때 등장해 궁중회화로 유행하다가 조선 문인들의 마음을 사로잡았고, 자녀를 둔 민간으로 확산됐다고 전해지는 화목이다. 오늘날 사람들이 좋아하는 물건을 진열장에 수집해 전시하는 것처럼 길상의 물건을 한 그림에 진열하듯 그려 넣어 감상할 수 있게 만든 것이다.
작가는 이런 책가도의 기능을 염두에 두고 호렵도에서 채취한 말의 도상에 전통적인 길상의 소재들을 하나씩 입혔나갔다. 화면 오른쪽에서 출발해 왼쪽 끝 사랑의 문을 향해 달려가는 80여 마리의 말은 모란, 연화, 매화, 백호, 봉황, 나비, 영지, 소나무, 천도, 구름, 해, 산 등의 문양과 ‘기쁨-囍(쌍희)’, ‘장수-壽(목숨수)’, ‘성스러움-聖(성스러울성)’ 같은 길상 문자로 장식된 마의(馬衣)를 둘렀다.
여기에 태극기를 비롯해 조각보, 단청 등의 전통 문양, 스웨덴의 목마인 달라호스 등 다양한 디자인 패턴을 더했다. 비단의 광택이나 문양을 수놓은 바느질 땀을 표현한 것도 보인다.
‘지혜의 숲’은 끊임없이 배우고 나아가고 싶은, 작가의 유토피아이다. 그 여정에 많은 지식(책)과 행복과 행운이 따르기를 바라는 작가의 염원을 읽을 수 있다. 과거 책가도가 길상의 물건들이 차곡차곡 쌓여 정적인 분위기라면 작가의 작품 속에서 다채로운 길상의 문양을 두르고 내달리는 말들은 힘차고 역동적이다. 지식이란 것을 안으로 쌓아두기보다 밖으로 펼쳐야 다음 세상으로 도약할 수 있다는 작가의 생각인 것이다.
한국마사회 정기환 회장은 “전통과 현재를 잇는 작품들을 제작하고 있는 작가의 열정에 박수를 보낸다”며 “많은 시민들이 아름다운 가을날, 박은주 작가의 초대전에서 21세기 민화의 정수를 만끽하시길 바란다”고 전했다.
한편, 박은주 작가의 초대전은 오는 12월 8일까지 열리며 전시장 사진을 SNS에 업로드하면 안내데스크에서 기념품을 제공하는 현장 이벤트도 진행된다.
