기자의 취재(取材) 도구 가운데, 취재 수첩(手帖)이 있다. 취재 과정을 이 수첩에 낱낱이 기록하는 것이다. 나는 51년 째 취재수첩을 사용해온 기자이다.
쿠바의 혁명가 체 게바라(1928년 6월 14일-1967년 10월 9일)는 군의관 출신이었다.
그를 소재로 한 다큐멘터리 영화를 본 일이 있다. 볼리비아 정글에서 게릴라전을 하다가, 39세 때 산 속에서 사망했다. 그는 기자가 아니었으면서도, 끊임없이 메모하는 사람이었다.
전투 중에도 나무 위에서 메모하는 모습이 연상된다. 체 게바라를 다룬 영화에 이 장면, 메모하는 모습이 들어가 있었다.

나는, 늘 '독재타도'라는 혁명을 꿈꾸었던, 반정부 기자출신인데... “기자생활 51년, 메모 광(狂)이었다”고 말할 수 있다. 기자수첩을 매월 3권 분량씩, 소모해왔다. 그 기자수첩을 모두 보관해왔다. 지금도, 나의 책상 위에는 사용한 기자수첩이 수북이 쌓여있다.

필자는 본지(브레이크뉴스) 2024년 4월2일자 “언론인 오소백...사실만을 기록해온 필자의 기자인생에 만난 '영원한 스승’”제목의 글에서 “필자는 ‘영원한 사회부장’이라고 불리었던 오소백(1921~2008) 언론인(서울언론인클럽 전 회장)을 통해서 기자수업을 받으면서, 기자생활을 지속했었다. 그분의 강의를 직접 들었고, 그 분이 쓴 매스컴 관련 책들(‘기자가 되려면’ ‘매스컴 취재와 보도의 실제’ 등)을 탐독하면서, 기자직에 대해서 배우고 행동했다.”면서 “1976년 여름, 경포대 해변에서 가졌던 기자 여름학교에서 만난 이후 2008년 작고하실 때까지 교유를 지속했었다. 그 분은 오랜 기간 서울언론인클럽의 회장이었는데, 필자에게 이 단체에 가입하기를 권유, 필자는 이 권유를 받아들여 서울언론인클럽의 회원으로 활동하기도 했다.”라고 회고 한 바 있다.
필자는 언론인 오소백 선생에게서 기자 생활 초기에 메모의 중요함을 교육 받았었다. 그리하여, 기자생활 내내 취재수첩을 안 주머니에 끼워놓고 살았다.
필자의 저서 가운데 '비록 중앙정보부(전 3권)' '미국 한인이민사 '미국귀신 한국귀신' 등이 있는데, 이들 저서들은 나의 취재수첩을 기초로 쓰여 진 책들이다. 나는 기자로서 메모의 덕을 톡톡히 본 사람이다.

기록을 남기는 방법이 달라진다 해도, 기자는 기록을 남기는 직업에 종사하는 사람이다. 다양한 방법으로 기록을 남기는 게 기자가 해야 할 임무(任務)이다. 시대가 변하더라도, 기록에 충실한 기자들의 수(數)가 많아졌으면 한다.
