대미 관계에 대해서는 “앞으로의 미국 특히 트럼프의 미국은 한국에게 감당하기 어려울 정도의 손실을 강요할 것이다. 그런 손실의 강요를 그대로 수용하는 것이 전략적 선명함이라면 그런 전략적 선명함은 한국에게 손실을 초래하고 따라서 절대로 수용해서는 안 되는 것”이라고 분석하면서 “전략적 모호함이라는 말은 한국에게 있어서 전혀 모호하지 않다. 한국은 미국과 중국사이의 패권싸움에 말려들지 않겠다는 매우 선명한 노선이다. 미국은 자국의 이익을 위해 모든 방법을 다 동원하면서, 한국에게는 자신의 이익을 위해 아무것도 하지 말고 스스로 손실을 보라는 것은 정당하지 않다.”고 지적했다.
