30일 경주시에 따르면 국도대체우회도로는 경주시내 국도 7호선과 35호선의 교통 혼잡을 해소하고, 도심과 외곽지역 간 연결성을 강화하기 위해 추진된 사업이다.
2016년 공사를 시작해 약 9년 만에 완공된 이번 도로는 4차로로 신설됐으며, 총사업비 1496억 원이 투입됐다.지난해 부분 개통에 이어 이번에 전 구간이 개통된다.
도로 개통으로 가장 큰 혜택을 받는 구간은 KTX 경주역과 경주시 도심이다. 기존 국도 4호선을 이용하던 차량은 14km를 약 10분간 운행해야 했으나, 신설된 우회도로를 이용하면 이동 거리는 6.5km로, 시간은 약 5분으로 대폭 단축된다.
또한 경주시 북부의 안강읍, 현곡면, 용황동과 남부의 외동읍 등 주요 거점 지역 간 이동 시간도 줄어들어 시민들의 통행 편의가 크게 개선될 것으로 기대된다.
