모스크바에는 중앙아시아 사람들이 상당히 많다. 불과 8년 전만 해도 그리 많이 없었던 것 같은데 기하급수적으로 늘어난듯 싶다. 중앙아시아인들이 하는 업무들은 대개 3D 업종이다. 무슬림들이 생각보다 많지 않았던 모스크바에 우즈벡 무슬림들 뿐 아니라 카작인, 키르기즈인, 타직인들이 들어오기 시작한 것이다.
이들 중앙아시아인들이 유럽이나 한국, 일본 등에 취업이 쉽지 않자 모스크바로 들어와 3D 업종과 택시 기사 등으로 기반을 닦아 돈 좀 모이면 중국으로 간다. 특히 최근 러중관계가 괜찮다보니 세레메쩨보나 도모데도보 뿐 아니라 심지어는 브누코보에도 중국 베이징이나 상하이, 광저우, 충칭으로 가는 비행기가 있다.
코로나 이전에 세레메쩨보 공항이나 도모데도보 공항에 중국인들나 우즈벡인들을 비롯한 중앙아시아 사람들이 바글바글하게 모여있어 이건 도대체 뭔가 싶었다. 실제로 공항 곳곳에서 중국어와 우즈벡어, 카작어, 타직어 등을 심심치 않게 들을 수 있었다. 심지어는 한국인인 필자를 보고 Hey!! Nihao !! 그러면서 친근감 표시하기까지 하며 택시 호객까지 하기도 한다.
중앙아시아 사람들이 중국으로 가는 이유는 러시아나 중앙아시아 국가들보다 급여가 쎄기 때문이다. 특히 베이징(북경)의 경우, 왠만한 러시아 지역보다 월급을 더 많이 준다. 예를 들어 모스크바에서 한 달에 18,700루블 (한화 약 30만원)을 번다면 적어도 베이징에서는 62,000루블 (한화 약 100만 원)을 벌 수 있기 때문이다. 타지키스탄의 경우 주로 러시아에서 일하는 국외 근로자들의 송금액이 국내총생산(GDP)의 약 40%를 차지할 만큼 많은 이들이 이민 노동을 해왔다.
게다가 중앙아시아인들 치고 러시아어를 못하는 사람들은 거의 없다. 언어가 되니 러시아 생활이 순조로운데다가 러시아 연방 정부가 모스크바에서 유럽으로 빠져 나가는 러시아 현지 젊은이들의 빈 자리를 메우기 위해 중앙아시아 젊은이들을 적극 고용하고 있는 실정이다. 무엇보다 러시아어가 되고 뭐든 시키면 잘하니 연방 정부 입장에서는 손해 볼 것은 없다. 이미 모스크바에는 종교시설로 대형 모스크들이 20개 가량 들어섰다고 들었다.
마치 우리나라 젊은이들이 3D 업종의 일을 기피하다보니 궁여지책으로 외노자 고용하는 것과 같은 의미다. 그렇다고 한국과는 달리 러시아에서는 젊은이들이 외노자들 때문에 취직 안 된다고 징징거리는 사람들이 거의 없다. 물론 2016년 이전에는 그런 사람들이 많았지만 2016년 이후에는 그런 사람들이 보이지 않고 있다. 오히려 "그런 사람들도 있어야죠" 하면서 쿨해진 분위기지만 여전히 중앙아시아 사람하면 좋지 않은 선입견을 가지고 판단하는 사람들이 매우 많다.

There are quite a few Central Asians in Moscow. It seems like there weren't that many just 8 years ago, but it seems to have increased exponentially. The jobs that Central Asians do are mostly 3D jobs. In Moscow, where there weren't as many Muslims as expected, not only Uzbek Muslims but also Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Tajiks have started coming in.
When it was difficult for these Central Asians to find jobs in Europe, Korea, and Japan, they came to Moscow and built a base as 3D workers and taxi drivers, and when they made some money, they went to China. In particular, since the recent Russia-China relationship has been good, there are flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chongqing in China, not only from Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo, but even from Vnukovo.
Before the coronavirus, there were so many Central Asians, including Chinese and Uzbeks, at Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports that I wondered what the heck was going on. In fact, you can often hear Chinese, Uzbek, Kazakh, and Tajik all over the airport. They even show their friendliness by saying, “Hey!! Nihao!!” to me, a Korean, and even try to solicit taxi drivers.
The reason Central Asians go to China is because the wages are higher than in Russia or Central Asian countries. In particular, Beijing pays more than most other Russian regions. For example, if you earn 18,700 rubles (about 300,000 won) a month in Moscow, you can earn at least 62,000 rubles (about 1 million won) in Beijing. In the case of Tajikistan, remittances from foreign workers working in Russia account for about 40% of the country’s GDP, so many people have immigrated as laborers.
In addition, there are almost no Central Asians who cannot speak Russian. Since they speak the language, life in Russia is easy, and the Russian government is actively hiring Central Asian youth to fill the gap left by local Russian youths leaving Moscow for Europe. I heard that there are already about 20 large mosques in Moscow as religious facilities. It is like our young people avoiding 3D jobs and hiring foreign workers as a last resort.
