브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 가자지구를 미국이 점령해 장기 발전시키겠다는 구상을 공식적으로 발표했다.
AP통신에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 4일(현지 시간) 워싱턴DC 백악관에서 베냐민 네타냐후 이스라엘 총리와 가진 공동 기자회견에서 "미국이 가자지구를 소유해 개발하면 수천 개의 일자리와 주택을 제공할 수 있다. 궁극적으론 주민들에게 기회를 주는 것"이라며 이같이 말했다.
그는 가자지구에 대해 '죽음과 파괴의 상징'이었다며 "우리는 가자지구에 관한 필요한 일을 할 것이다. 미국이 장기적인 소유권을 확보하면 중동 지역 전체에 큰 안정을 가져다줄 것"이라고 주장했다.
트럼프 대통령은 이같은 구상안은 갑자기 나온 것이 아니며 몇 달에 걸쳐 내린 구상이라고 설명하며 "가볍게 내려진 결정이 아니다. 수개월간 아주 면밀하게 연구했고, 모든 각도에서 관찰했다. 이번 아이디어는 엄청난 영향을 미칠 것"이라고 설명했다.
특히 최고위층 지도부의 지지도 받았다고 강조하기도 했다.
네타냐후 이스라엘 총리도 이와 관련, 미국이 가자지구를 점령한다면 가자가 더이상 이스라엘에 위협이 되지 않을 것이라고 언급하며 "트럼프 대통령의 안은 주목할 가치가 있다고 생각하고 우린 이에 대해 얘기하고 있다. (가자지구의 미국 점령은) 역사를 바꿀 것이다"라고 힘을 싣기도 했다.
