브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 취임한 직후 각종 명분을 내세우며 영토 확장 야욕을 드러내고 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 앞서 덴마크령인 그린란드, 파나마가 소유한 파나마 운하에 대해 미국 편입 의사를 드러낸 적 있다.
그는 그린란드 매입 의지를 밝히며 이를 반대하는 메테 프레데릭센 덴마크 총리와 설전을 벌이기도 했다.
파이낸셜타임스(FT)에 따르면 덴마크 고위급 당국자는 두 정상의 통화 분위기는 "끔찍했다"고 전하며 "트럼프 대통령은 표적 관세와 같은 구체적인 조치로 위협하기도 했다"고 말했다.
파나마 운하와 관련해선, 운하에 중국의 영향력이 커지는 것에 대해 우려하며 운하 통제권을 미국이 환수해야 한다는 논리를 펼쳤다.
태평양과 대서양을 잇는 길이 82㎞의 파나마 운하는 미국 주도로 1914년 완공됐으며 미국은 ‘영구적 중립성’ 보장 준수 등을 조건으로 1999년 소유권을 파나마 정부로 이전했다.
AP통신에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 "중국이 파나마 운하를 운영하고 있다"고 못박으며 이를 시정하지 않을 경우 파나마에 이양한 운하 통제권을 환수할 수 있다고 여러 차례 언급했다.
그는 여기에 더해 4일(현지시간) 이스라엘 인근 팔레스타인 통치 지역인 가자지구를 미국 땅으로 편입하겠다고 선언했다.
