브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 더불어민주당 국회 예산결산특별위원회(이하 민주당 예결위) 위원 일동은 가스전 개발 '대왕고래 프로젝트' 실패와 관련 정부여당에 공식 사과를 요구했다.
민주당 예결위는 6일 성명을 통해 "사업이 경제성이 불투명한 상태에서 강행되었으며, 정부의 무책임한 운영과 국민의힘의 비호가 혈세 낭비로 이어졌다"고 강하게 비판했다.
대왕고래 프로젝트는 동해 심해 가스전을 개발하기 위한 시추 사업으로, 윤석열 대통령과 산업통상자원부가 적극적으로 추진한 국책 사업이었다. 정부와 한국석유공사는 해당 가스전이 최대 140억 배럴, 최소 35억 배럴의 매장량을 가질 것이라 주장하며 시추를 강행했으나 첫 번째 시추에서조차 경제성을 입증하지 못했다.

민주당은 지난해 대왕고래 관련 예산을 삭감했음에도 불구하고, 한국석유공사는 자체 사업비를 투입해 시추를 강행했다고 지적하며 "국민의힘은 민주당이 산유국의 꿈을 가로막는다며 비난했지만, 결국 무리한 사업이었음이 증명됐다"고 말했다.
특히 권영세 국민의힘 비상대책위원장이 불과 며칠 전 대왕고래 예산을 복구하겠다고 발언한 점을 지적하며 정부와 국민의힘의 책임 있는 태도를 촉구했다.
민주당 예결위는 아울러 이번 사태를 과거 전두환 정권 시절 추진된 평화의댐과 비교하며 "정권의 위기 돌파를 위한 허풍과 왜곡, 거짓말이 난무한 사례"라며 정부가 지금이라도 관련 자료를 투명하게 국회에 제출하고, 이번 실패를 반면교사 삼아 향후 국책사업에서 국민과의 소통 및 국회의 감사·예산 심의권을 존중해야 한다고 강조했다.
