필자의 회사(브레이크뉴스)는 서울 중구의 숭례문(崇禮門-南大門. 1396년 축성)에서 아주 가까이에 있다. 숭례문은 조선 시대에 건립된 한양 도성의 남쪽 정문이다. 4대문의 하나이다. '서울 숭례문'이 공식 명칭이다. 역사와 위치로 봐 서울을 상징할 수 있는 건물이어서 '국보 제1호'로 정해져 있다.
위키백과는 숭례문(崇禮門)에 대해 “조선의 수도였던 서울의 4대문(大門) 중의 하나로 남쪽의 대문이다. 흔히 남대문(南大門)이라고도 부른다. 서울 4대문 및 보신각(普信閣)의 이름은 오행사상을 따라 지어졌는데, 이런 명칭은 인(仁: 동), 의(義: 서), 례(禮: 남), 지(智: 북), 신(信: 중앙)의 5덕(五德)을 표현한 것이었으며, 숭례문의 '례'는 여기서 유래한 것”이라고 소개하고 “숭례문의 편액은 《지봉유설》에 따르면 양녕대군이 썼다고 알려져 있으나 이설이 많다. 1396년(태조 5년)에 최유경의 지휘로 축성하였다. 1447년(세종 29년)과 1479년(성종 10년) 고쳐지었다”고 설명했다. 1396년에 축성됐으니 올해로 629년째 된 건물이다.
필자의 생각에, 이 숭례문은 대한민국 국민들에게 주는 유별난 의미가 있다고 생각된다.
숭례문 건물 터의 넓이는 311 m2(제곱미터)이다. 한국은 자본주의 국가이다. 누구든지 부동산을 소유할 자유가 주어져 있다. 국보 1호 건물 터의 넓이는 94평이다. 그리 넓은 평수가 아니기 때문에 우리나라 사람들 가운데는 이 평수 보다 많은 부동산을 소유한 이들이 많다. 농토를 소유한, 농부들은 더 많은 부동산은 소유하고 있을 것이다.
국보 1호보다 더 많은 부동산 평수를 소유할 수 있다는 것은, 자본주의 체제 덕분(德分)이다. 공산주의 체제에서는 사유 재산이 인정되지 않는다. 그리하여 공산주의 하에서는 부동산이 모두 국가의 소유이다. 숭례문이 선 자리의 부동산 넓이에 대해 논하는 것은, 결코 국가의 국보 1호를 깔보는 식의 접근이 아니다. 누구나 노력하면, 그 정도의 부동산을 소유할 수 있는 국가 체제에 살고 있다는, 각 개인의 존귀심(尊貴心)을 언급하려는 의미이다.
필자의 회사는 서대문구 합동에 있다. 숭례문과 아주 가까이에 있다. 회사 터의 넓이는 숭례문 건물 터의 넓이 보다 더 넓다. 신문사(브레이크뉴스) 사옥은 필자의 자존감을 높여주는 소유물이다. 숭례문은 조선시대 때 서울 중앙부를 입성하는 중요한 문이었다.
개인의 존귀심을 보장받을 수 있는, 자본주의 체제에서 살아가는 국민들 각자가 해야 할 일이란, 위대한 국가를 건설, 글로벌 시대에서 위대한 국가를 축조(築造)하는 일이라고 생각한다.
숭례문은 한국이 자본주의를 받아들여 성공한 '쇼윈도우'라 할 수 있다. 숭례문, 그 주변의 빌딩 군(群)을 보라. 숭례문은 해가 바뀔수록, 한국의 경제적인 발전 정도를 웅변해주는 기준이 될 것이다. 포용적 경제제도인 '미국식 자본주의'의 영속을 증언해줄 것이다. 그런 점에서, 숭례문 건축평수인 54평 보다 더 많은 평수를 소유하는 대한민국 사람이 더 많아지기를 바란다. 숭례문 터는 국가와 모든 국민에게 그런 중요한 의미를 더해준다.
