필자는 올챙이 기자시절에 가톨릭과 명동성당을 출입했다. 이 인연으로 김수환 추기경 관련 책을 출간했었다. 책의 제목은 김수환 추기경 세상살이 “당신의 도구로써 주소서(신라원. 1995년 출간)”였다.
시중에서 이 책이 판매되자 명동성당 내에 있는 김수환 추기경 비서실에서 나를 초청했었다. 이때, 추기경 사무실을 처음 들어가 봤다. 추기경에게 내 책을 전해드렸다.
2월16일. 오늘은 김수환 추기경이 선종한 16주기이다.
그 분은 성직자로서 박정희 군사 독재정권 때-전두환 군사독재 때, 민주화의 편에 섰던 분이시다. 김 추기경이 ‘6·10항쟁’ 당시 아래와 같은 말이 귓가에 윙윙거린다.
“경찰이 성당에 들어오면 제일 먼저 나를 만나게 될 것입니다. 그 다음 시한부 농성 중인 신부들을 보게 될 것입니다. 또 그 신부들 뒤에는 수녀들이 있습니다. 당신들이 연행하려는 학생들은 수녀들 뒤에 있습니다. 학생들을 체포하려거든 나를 밟고, 그 다음 신부와 수녀들을 밟고 지나가십시오(1987년 6·10항쟁 당시 명동성당에 경찰력 투입을 통보하러 온 경찰 고위 관계자에게 한 말)”
1987년 명동성당에서 봉헌된 ‘박종철군 추모 및 고문 추방을 미사’에서 김수환 추기경은 “지금 하느님께서는 우리에게 묻고 계신다. 너희 젊은이, 너희 국민의 한 사람인 박종철은 어디 있느냐? ‘그것은 고문 경찰관 두 사람이 한 일이니 모르는 일이다’하면서 잡아떼고 있다. 바로 카인의 대답이다”면서 “위정자도 국민도 여당도 야당도 부모도 교사도 종교인도 모두 이 한 젊은이의 참혹한 죽음 앞에 무릎을 꿇고 가슴을 치며 통곡하고 반성해야 한다. 이제까지 우리가 부끄럽게 살아온 그의 죽음 앞에 새롭게 태어나 그가 못다 이룬 일을 뒤에 남은 우리가 이룬다면 그의 죽음은 절대 헛되지 않으리라 확신한다”고 강조했다.

김수환 추기경이 남긴 어록 가운데 다음 구절을 복기한다.
“생각해보면 나는 죄인이다. 허물이 많은 사람이다. 하느님 앞에서는 고개도 들 수 없는 대죄인이라 해도 과언이 아니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 하느님은 오히려 이런 죄와 허물을 통해서-사도 바오로가 죄 많은 곳에 은총도 충만히 내리셨다(로마 5,20)고 하신대로- 당신의 사랑, 당신의 자비, 당신의 그 풍성한 용서의 은총을 깨닫게 하여 주셨다. 오, 펠릭스 꿀빠!(oh, felix culpa! 오, 복된 탓이여!)”김수환 추기경은 지난 2009년이 2월16일 선종했다. 이 때, 가톨릭서울대교구는 김수환 추기경의 일대기를 집대성한 보도자료를 냈다. 이 자료 가운데 “북녘 땅을 위한 기도” 부분을 상기(想起)한다. 그가 못다 이룬 꿈이었기 때문이다.
“김 추기경은 북한 교회와 동포를 항상 기억하려고 노력했다. 그것은 무엇보다도 서울대교구의 관할 구역이 휴전선을 넘어서 황해도까지 이어진다는 사실과도 관련이 있었다. 미사 마침예식에서 주교는 오른손으로 세 번 십자표시를 하면서 신자들에게 강복하는데 김 추기경은 언제나 그 마지막 세 번째 십자표시를 마음에 품고 있는 북녘 형제들을 생각하면서 그었다고 한다. 통일에 대비하고 앞으로의 북한 선교를 위한 실질적 기반을 마련하기 위해 1995년 ‘민족화해위원회’를 설립하게 된다. 같은 해 3월 7일 명동대성당에서 시작된 ‘민족화해 미사’는 지금도 매주 화요일 오후 7시에 봉헌되고 있다.”

When I was a tadpole reporter, I used to visit Catholicism and Myeongdong Cathedral. Through this connection, I published a book about Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan. The title of the book was Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan’s Life in the World “Your Address as a Tool (Shillawon, published in 1995).” When this book was on sale in the market, I was invited to Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan’s secretary’s office in Myeongdong Cathedral. At that time, I first entered the cardinal’s office. I gave the cardinal my book.
February 16. Today is the 16th anniversary of Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan’s death.
