내 삶의 경우, 매우 중요한 시대에 태어나 자란 듯하다. 이 시대의 시대정신(時代精神)을 내 나름대로 정리해본다.
우선, 나는 ▲인터넷 시대 ▲우주시대를 살고 있다.
인터넷 시대의 경우, 지난 2002년부터 브레이크뉴스를 발행해왔으니, 23년째 이 시대(인터넷 시대-온라인 시대)를 선도(先導)해온 셈이다. 인터넷 시대의 제1세대 주자(走者)인 것이다.
이 시대의 특성은 검색과 속도이다. “번개처럼 빠르게”라는 개념일 수 있다. 뉴스와 정보가 번개처럼 검색-공유되는 시대를 살고 있다.
그간, 브레이크뉴스에 탑재(搭載)된 뉴스-정보의 총수는 1,065,372(2월 16일 현재) 개에 달한다. 검색 단어를 넣어 검색하면, 순간에 검색이 가능하다. 오프라인(종이매체) 시대에는 상상도 할 수 없는, 시대에 살고 있다고 하겠다. 인공지능(AI)을 이용한 첨단 인터넷시대가 활짝 열려 있다.
지구촌은 이미 활발한 인공위성 시대로 돌입했다. 3,000여 개의 인공위성이 우주 속에 띄워져 있다. 국가별로는 미국이 1,400개로 가장 많다. 중국 500개. 러시아 300개로 그 뒤를 잇는다. 우리나라의 경우, 시작단계로 인공위성 분야의 후진(後進)국가이다. 각종 통신서비스, 전화통화, GPS 업무. 기후-지구 관측 등이 인공위성을 통해 이뤄지고 있다.
선진국들이 그 동안 쏘아올린이 비밀 인공위성이 몇 개인지는 파악되지 않는다. 그러나 다수의 지구 지배용 비밀 인공위성이 존재할 것이다. 특히 정보 분야의 비밀 인공위성이 국제적인 정보활동을 위해 암약(暗躍)하고 있을 것이다.
필자는 대한민국 인터넷 신문사 사주(社主) 중의 한 사람으로서, 뉴스전용 소형(極小型) 인공위성을 소유하고 싶다. 필자가 이런 꿈을 꾸는 것은, 아직은 꿈에 머무를 뿐이다. 그러나, 아주 가까운 장래에, 그런 꿈이 현실화될 수 있음을 상상(想像)한다. 지금은 우주로 급(急)발진(發進)하는, 첨단 우주기술 시대이기 때문이다.
일개 언론사가 인공위성을 띄워 뉴스를 탑재하는, 글로벌 통신을 장악하는 전 단계에 도달해 있다. 쉬운 예로, 브레이크뉴스도 인공위성을 띄워 운용할 자금(資金)이 있다한다면, 당장이라도 자체 인공위성을 소유할 수 있는 첨단 문명시대를 살고 있는 것이다.
중앙일보는 지난 3월6일자 “'위성 4만개' 야심 스타링크, 오지 없는 한국서 뭘 노리나” 제목의 기사에서 ‘스타링크’ 관련 내용을 소개했다. 이 기사에서 “스타링크는 저궤도 위성으로 인터넷을 공급하는 서비스다. 저궤도는 고도 약 200~2000㎞인데, 스타링크는 550㎞ 정도 비교적 낮은 높이에 위성을 배치했다”고 소개하고 “현재까지 약 7000개 위성을 띄웠고 3년 안에 1만2000개, 2030년까지 4만 개 이상을 띄울 계획”이라고 전했다. 이 기사는 “이 위성을 이용해 지상 기지국이 제대로 갖춰지지 않은 오지나 개발도상국, 전쟁터나 재난 지역에서도 초고속 인터넷을 쓸 수 있게 했다. 이미 전 세계 114개국에서 500만 명 이상이 이용 중”이라고 덧붙인다.

나는 인터넷 1세대를 살고 있다. 또한 인공위성 시대의 가까이에서 살고 있다. 그러하니, 나는 인공위성 시대를 맛보면서 살아가는 1세대이다.
이런 시대, 스스로 자존감(自尊感)을 갖고 살아가고 있다. 나는 과거의 조상들과 전혀 다른 세상에서 살고 있다.

그뿐 아니라, 과거에서는 상상도 할 수 없는 우주시대라는, 첨단세상에서 살고 있다. 그러하니 스스로 자존감을 가질 수 있다. 나는 신인류(新人類)이다. 이 시대를 살고 있는 모든 사람들에게 해당되는 말이다. 스스로 자존감을 가져도 된다.
