시는 이를 통해 국내 기술로 개발된 자율주행 기술을 세계에 선보이고, 스마트 모빌리티 선도 도시로 도약하겠다는 구상이다.
국토교통부는 지난 18일 ‘자율차 시범운행지구 서비스 지원사업’ 공모 결과를 발표하며, 경주를 비롯한 서울, 세종, 경기(판교·안양), 충남 천안, 경남 하동, 제주 등 8개 도시에 총 26억 원을 지원키로 확정했다. 경주시는 6억 원의 국고보조금을 확보해, 전국 최대 규모의 지원을 받았다.
경주시는 지난해 12월 국토부로부터 보문관광단지 12.85㎞ 구간을 ‘자율주행차 시범운행지구’로 지정받고, APEC 행사 대비 준비를 진행해왔다. 현재 화백컨벤션센터에서 경주월드, 동궁원, 라한셀렉트까지 보문호 주변을 순환하는 B형 자율주행차 1대를 운영하며 시민과 관광객들에게 체험 기회를 제공하고 있다.
경주시는 오는 6월부터 자율주행 셔틀버스를 3대로 확대 운영할 계획이다. APEC 관련 행사 기간에는 회의장과 주요 호텔을 연결하는 순환 노선을 추가하고, 기존 보문호 관광 순환형 노선과 함께 다양한 자율주행 서비스를 제공할 방침이다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “2025년 APEC 정상회의의 성공적 개최를 위해 시민과 관광객들에게 자율주행차 체험 기회를 무상으로 제공하고, 미래 모빌리티 선도 도시로 자리매김할 것”이라며, “지능형교통시스템(ITS) 구축을 통해 스마트한 도로교통 인프라를 대내외에 알리는 계기로 삼겠다”고 말했다.

Mayor Joo Nak-young of Gyeongju said, “In order to successfully host the 2025 APEC Summit, we will provide citizens and tourists with the opportunity to experience autonomous vehicles free of charge and establish ourselves as a leading city in future mobility,” and “We will use this as an opportunity to publicize smart road traffic infrastructure domestically and internationally by establishing an intelligent transportation system (ITS).”
