시골의 아늑한 정취를 품고 있는 연산역에는 기차 체험을 하기 위해 많은 어린이와 가족들이 주말마다 붐빈다. 한가롭게 몇 걸음을 옮기면 소소한 아름다움을 가진 연산 문화창고의 너른 광장이 펼쳐진다.
이곳 아주 작은 갤러리에는 매번 전시회가 열리고 있다. 이중섭, 클로드 모네, 조던 매트 사진전, 빈센트 반 고흐, 등 비록 레플리카전이지만 황새 날갯짓 여유로운 시골의 한적한 공간에 닿는 전시회 시간은 멈추어진 듯 흐름을 느낄 수 없다.
이번에는 조선의 명화 전을 품고 있었다. 발길이 뜸한 평일의 고요 속에 나의 숨소리와 발걸음 소리만 들린다. 깔끔한 도록의 공간처럼 구름에 달 가듯 흐르며 그림 속 작가의 마음에 머물며 상상을 만끽한다
전국 어디든 전시회가 있으면 어렵게 티켓을 구하고 줄을 서서 사람에 밀려 쫓기듯 관람하던 때보다 여유가 있어 더 선명하고 깊은 생각과 감동을 천천히 여유를 가지고 누릴 수 있다.

‘詩 시는 無形 무형의 그림이며 그림은 有形 유형의 詩 다’라는 말이 있다. 동양화는 붓과 먹의 세계이다. 시적인 생각을 깊고도 은은한 그림으로 옮기는데 음양의 동양적 사고는 여백을 두어 완성한다. 그림을 그리지 않아 그림이게 만드는 것이 여백의 미다. 자연을 찬미하고 공감하며 가슴으로 품고 그 세계를 손으로 그려내며 그 속으로 들어가는 것이다.
서양미술은 색을 칠하는 것으로 시작하지만 동양화는 한 점에서 출발하여 그린다. 서양화가 ‘보고 있다’라고 한다면 동양화는 ‘보아간다’라고 표현될 수 있다고 한다. 동양화는 나의 마음과 몸이 들어가는 것이고 그림 속 인물은 내가 그 속에서 자연의 아름다움을 보고 느끼는 것이다.
작가의 주관적 사상과 감정이 객관적 대상에 융화되어 예술적 의미와 형상을 형성한 것을 이를 意境의경이라 한다. ‘마음으로 세상을 바라보고 그려진 풍경을 유람하다.’ 이번 전시회의 첫 번째 주제였고 들어서자마자 가장 깊은 감동을 느낄 수 있어 연산에서 살아가고 있는 노년의 수묵화 같은 삶이 감사하게 느껴졌다.

네 번째 주제였던 物我一體 물아일체, 자연과 자아가 일체가 되어 하나가 되는 순간, 대상에 완벽하게 몰입하여 하나로 통일된 예술적 경험을 느끼는 상태. “내가 꿈에 나비가 된 것일까? 아니면 나비가 꿈에 나로 변한 것일까? “
장르를 가리지 않고 미술 전시회를 다니고 있지만 편안하게 침잠하여 깊은 감동에 쉽게 들어갈 수 있는 것은 조선의 수묵화에서이다. 지난해 이건희 컬렉션도 예약을 놓쳐 마지막 전북도립미술관에서 어렵게 볼 기회를 가졌다. 그곳에서 근현대 작가들의 모든 작품이 가슴에 쏟아져 들어왔지만, 그중에서도 수묵화가 빨려 들어가듯 그 선경 속 고요히 흐르는 마음에 닿을 수 있었다.
‘서양미술은 자연의 혜택보다는 인간 자신의 끊임없는 노력으로 그들의 생활을 유지할 수 있던 문명의 소산이다. 따라서 인간과 인간 사이의 미묘한 갈등이나 자연에 대한 저항에서 비롯된다.
그들의 정신은 인간과 같은 욕정을 지닌, 즉 인간과 인간이 싸우고 먹고, 사랑을 하는, 다시 말해 생활 중심의 인간 자체에 있는 것으로, 그 자체의 본질을 찾으려 하는 것이 서양미술의 밑바탕이 된다.’는 허유 선생님의 표현처럼 욕망의 이끌림대로 힘겹게 살아가야 하는 우리의 마음에 닿는 것은 서양화의 다양한 표현일지도 모른다.
