소련의 마지막 지도자 미하일 고르바초프는 변화에 대한 사람들의 열망을 반영한 빅토르 최의 음악들이 자신이 소련의 개혁을 추진하기로 결심하게 된 이유 중 하나였다고 언급한 적이 있었을 정도였다. 그러던 1990년 8월 15일, 라트비아 리가 인근 유르말라 슬로카-탈시(Jurmala Sloka-Talsi) 도로 35km 지점에서 오전 11시 28분 반대편 차선에서 마주오는 버스와 충돌해 그 자리에서 사망하고 말았다.
이 때 건질 수 있었던 온전한 물건은 그의 유작으로 알려지게 된 앨범인 Кукушка (뻐꾸기) 하나 뿐이었다고 한다. 수많은 팬들은 KGB가 의도적으로 빅토르 최를 살해했다고 믿고 있다. 평소 반전과 평화 사상을 주장하던 빅토르 최가 당시 소련 권력자들의 눈 밖에 나서 버스가 고의로 충돌했다는 것이다.

친조부 막심 초이(최승준)는 본래 대한제국 함경북도 성진 출생이었고 후일 일제 시대 초기에 러시아로 건너간 고려인 출신이었다. 그러한 출생 배경도 나의 심장을 뛰게 만들어준 원인이 되었다.
