중견언론인들의 모임인 한국전문언론인협회(회장/김동성)는 3월 28일자 보도자료에서 홍원경 (주)서광보석 회장에게 ‘2025혁신리더대상’을 시상했다고 밝혔다.
이 협회는 홍원경 회장에 대해 “장영실 국제과학문화상 공로상 등 수많은 수상경력을 보유하고 있는 보석명장으로서, 대한민국 최고기록인증원(KBRI) 및 세계기록인증원(SWRI)으로부터 보석 다이아몬드 명인으로 선정된 가운데, 우리나라 보석업계 발전에 주도적으로 이바지 하는 등 국가경쟁력 강화에 기여했다”고 평가했다.
이날 홍원경 회장의 수상소감은 듣는 이들의 가슴을 뭉클하게 만들었다.
“저는 너무나도 가난한 집안의 홀어머니 밑에서 자라면서 헝그리정신을 무기로 인생을 개척해왔습니다. 젊은 시절 한 때는 영등포역 전에서 노숙자생활을 하기도 했습니다. 그곳에서 보석관계자와 인연이 되어 보석의 길로 들어섰고, 이제는 감사하게도 대한민국의 보석명인이라는 칭호를 듣게 되었습니다. 저의 좌우명은 초심을 잃지 말자는 것입니다. 초심을 잃으면 삶의 목표가 흔들리기 때문입니다. 또한 내가 손해를 봐야 상대방이 이익을 본다는 그런 마음으로 살아왔습니다. 사회가 나한테 베푼 은혜를 이제 사회와 이웃에게 돌려주고 아프고 힘든 사람들에게 베푸는 그런 인생을 살고 싶습니다. 미국의 석유재벌 록펠러가 55세때 시한부선고를 받은 날 병원 로비에 걸린 액자에 ‘주는 자가 받는 자보다 복이 있다’는 구절을 보고 감명을 받았는데, 마침 병원비를 못내 입원을 거부당한 소녀를 몰래 도와주게 됐고, 그 후 록펠러는 병이 기적적으로 완치되어 98세까지 살았다는 얘기를 본보기 삼아 저도 나눔의 삶을 살고 있습니다.”
수많은 수상 경력과 표창 이력을 갖고 있는 홍원경 회장은 바이오산업에 기여한 공로를 인정받아 2023년 10월 장영실 국제과학문학상 공로상을 수상했다. 지난 2024년 5월 국회문화체육관광위원회 위원장상을 수상했다. 아시아태평양환경(NGO) 한국본부가 주최한 대회에서 스피치부분 대상을 수상했다. 지난 2024년 6월 국제문화예술제 문화부분에서 통일부장관상을 받았다. 지난 2024년 7월 도전한국인에서 ‘사회공헌대상’과 12월 ‘아시아리더대상’을 수상했다.
한편 홍원경 회장은 올해 가을쯤 자서전을 출간할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

Meanwhile, Chairman Hong Won-kyung announced that he plans to publish an autobiography sometime this fall.
