저자 이정면 교수(미국 유타대 지리학)는 해외에서 반세기를 살아오면서 우리 민족의 원초적인 정서의 뿌리가 아리랑에 있음을 깨닫고 또 저항(抵抗), 대동(大同), 해원상생(解寃相生)이라는 아리랑 정신에 감복하여 수년에 걸쳐 관련 지역을 답사한 후 2007년 <한 지리학자의 아리랑 기행>을 출간했다. 그때 아리랑 연구의 한 방법으로 e. o. 윌슨 교수가 주장한 통섭과 통합의 필요성을 강조하면서, 지리학자로서 아리랑 연구의 변(辯)을 “인문지리의 궁극의 귀착지는 그 민족의 전통문화유산을 규명하는 것”이라고 언급했다.

이 책에는 아리랑의 기원과 역사, 4대 아리랑(서울/경기, 정선, 밀양, 진도), 해외 곳곳에서 불리는 아리랑, 아리랑을 사랑한 세계적인 뮤지션과 노벨상 수상자들의 이야기, 아리랑과 비슷한 역사를 가진 삼바, 탱고, 재즈 등을 소개했다. 미국 장로교의 찬송가에 실린 아리랑과 스웨덴의 자장가로 불리는 아리랑 등 방대한 자료와 현지답사를 통해 얻은 귀중한 결과물들이 실려 있다.
세계 구비유산의 상징으로 세계인의 노래가 된 아리랑을 소개한 책이 영문판으로 출간된 것은, 우리 민족의 문화적 심벌인 아리랑의 위상을 높이는 데 크게 기여할 것.
