경영 대상은 매일경제신문과 과학기술정보통신부, 산업통상자원부 등이 후원하며, 뛰어난 행정 전략과 과감한 도전으로 우수한 성과를 이룬 기관과 기업을 선정하여 시상하는 제도이다.
경주시는 △APEC 정상회의 유치 △차세대 원자력산업 발전 △e-모빌리티 연구단지 구축 △도심 경제 활성화 △저출생 종합대책 마련 △편리한 교통, 녹색 경주 등의 공로를 인정받아 수상의 영예를 안았다.
특히, 경주는 2005년 부산 APEC 이후 20년 만에 APEC 정상회의를 10월 말에 유치하며 주목을 받았다. 최근 2~3월에 경주를 방문한 SOM1 및 실무회의 각국 대표단은 숙박, 의료, 회의장 시설 등에서 높은 만족도를 보였다.
경주는 또한 차세대 원자력 발전 기술인 SMR을 본격 연구·개발하고 있으며, 이를 제조·수출하는 SMR 국가산단을 조성하는 등 차세대 원전산업의 메카로 자리매김하고 있다.

또한, 경주는 금리단길을 ‘신라의 황금문화와 경주의 별 개양성’을 주제로 빛광장과 빛거리로 탈바꿈시키며, 지난해 9월에는 황금 카니발 축제가 열려 15만 명이 방문하는 성과를 거두었다.
경주시는 지난해 4월 ‘경주형 저출생과 전쟁 종합대책 보고회’를 열고, 인구 감소 완화와 미래 인구 구조 변화에 대응할 63개 사업과 791억 원 규모의 투자 계획을 발표했다.
교통 편의성 향상도 이루어졌다. 지난해 5월에는 현곡면과 황성동을 잇는 371m 길이, 20m 폭의 황금대교가 개통되었으며, 황리단길 인근에 차량 894대를 수용할 수 있는 대규모 환승주차장이 올해 말 완공될 예정이다. 이 사업은 사정동 428번지 일원 4만 7,248㎡ 부지에 235억 원을 투입하여 이루어지고 있다.
