경주시는 9일 이번 공모 선정 소식을 발표하고, 향후 관련 사업을 본격 추진할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 이번 사업은 3D프린팅 기술을 기반으로 한 SMR 제작지원센터를 설립해 원전 관련 중소·중견기업의 제작 역량을 강화하고, 원자력 분야 전문인력을 체계적으로 양성하는 데 목적이 있다.
시는 경상북도와 협력해 총사업비 320억 원(국비 97억 원, 지방비 213억 원, 주관기관 부담금 10억 원)을 투입, 문무대왕면 ‘경주 SMR 국가산업단지’ 내 약 1만6,500㎡(약 5,000평) 규모로 센터를 조성할 예정이다. 사업 기간은 5년이며, 주관기관은 한국재료연구원이 맡고, 한국원자력연구원, 포스텍, 대한전기협회가 공동 연구기관으로 참여한다.
소형모듈원자로(SMR, Small Modular Reactor)는 전기출력 300MWe 이하의 소형 원자로로, 모듈화된 설계와 간소한 제어계통 덕분에 기존 대형원전보다 높은 안전성과 경제성을 갖춘 것으로 평가받고 있다. 특히 재생에너지와의 연계성이 뛰어나 차세대 원전 기술로 각광받고 있으며, 국제에너지기구(IEA)에 따르면 오는 2035년까지 약 650조 원 규모의 글로벌 시장 형성이 예상된다.
