필자는 페이스북에 영화제작자 전옥숙 여사(1929-2015), 사업가 채현국 선생(1929-2015)의 보시(布施-자비심으로 재물을 베풂) 인생을 추적, 이에 대한 글을 게재한 바 있다. 이 두 분 삶의 공통점으로는 가진 재산을 남에게 나눠준, 따뜻함을 지녔다는 것이다.
이 두 분의 일생을 추적하면서 김동길(1928-2022) 전 연세대 교수(박사)를 떠올리게 됐다. 군사독재 타도-민주화 운동의 전면에 섰고, 가난한 이들을 줄기차게 도왔던 분이다. 쉼 없이 사람들을 집으로 초대, 위로의 말을 해주고, 맛있는 음식을 대접해주기도 했다.
사망 했을 때인 지난 2022년 10월4일 무렵, 김동길 박사의 사저(私邸)는 이화여대에, 시신(屍身)은 세브란스 병원에 기증했다는 기사를 봤다. 인생을 아주 따스하게 살다 간 분이다.
필자는 김동길 박사님의 은혜를 직접 입은 사람이다. 1980년 초반, 주요 월간지 등에 전문적으로 글을 기고하는 프리랜서를 했는데, 어느 해인가는 김동길 박사의 기고 건 수 1위를, 내가 2위를 차지했었다. 김동길 박사는 그만큼 글을 많이 쓴 다작(多作) 주의자였다.
1991년, 필자는 강증산 일대기를 다룬 소설 '천명' 제1권을 출간했었다. 이때 증산계의 한 교단에서 필자를 단체로 테러, 필자는 경찰에 신변보호를 요청했었고, 위기를 모면할 수 있었다.
이 소식이 서울신문 등 언론에 보도된 후 김동길 연세대 교수가 "언론인-작가에게 그런 테러가 있어서는 안된다"며, 필자를 옹호해주었다. 예산전문대 홍범초 교수가 필자에게 소설 강증산과 관련된 증산교단의 초기자료 다수를 제공해줬다. 증산계의 한 교단이 사주한 살인사건이 벌어졌다. 홍범초 교수 부부가 예산 자택에서 살해된 사건이었다. 필자에게 소설 자료를 제공했던 홍 교수 부부가 피살됐었다. 엄청난 살인사건이었다.
그 당시, 김동길 박사께서, 이 사건으로 고통당하던 필자를 옹호해주었다. 은인이었다. 그 당시, 김동길 박사는 언론자유와 작가의 표현의 자유 편에 서 준 것이다. 가끔씩, 저녁에 집으로 초대, 맛있는 음식을 손수 장만, 접대해 주기도 했다.
김동길 박사의 인생을 뒤돌아보면, 박정희 군사 독재에 저항했던 지식인이었다. 여러 차례, 그 분의 서대문 자택을 방문, 대화할 기회가 있었다. 필자가 발행인으로 있는, 브레이크뉴스에도 칼럼을 게재, 제 신문도 그분 특유의 정론직필을 향유할 수 있었다.
생전의 김동길 박사는 학자로, 작가로, 연설가로, 정치인(국회의원)으로, 독실한 기독교인으로, 사회운동가로...광폭적인 삶을 구가했었다.
여러 주변 분들의 증언에 따르면, 그분은 소유했던 재화(財貨)를 한 푼도 남기지 않고, 타인에게 모두 나눠 주는 삶이었다. 마지막에는 시신을 세브란스병원에, 집은 이대에 기증했다는 사실에서, 그분 인생이 지녔던 뜨거운 온기를 느끼게 한다.
