브레이크뉴스 정명훈 기자= 신동욱 국민의힘 수석대변인은 21일 제58회 과학의 날을 맞아 "과학강국으로 도약하기 위해 아낌없는 투자와 과감한 정책 마련에 힘쓰겠다"고 밝혔다.
신 수석대변인은 이날 논평을 통해 "과학의 날은 일제강점기인 1934년, 우리나라 과학자들을 비롯한 각계 인사들이 의기투합해 만든 '과학데이'에서 비롯돼, 1960년대 박정희 정부 시절 국가 기념일로 지정됐다"며 이같이 말했다.
그는 "일제의 압제 속에서도 민족의 힘을 함양하고 독립을 앞당기기 위한 민족운동의 기틀이었던 과학기술은 이제 국가의 생존과 번영을 좌우하는 전략적 자산으로 자리잡았다"고 평가했다.
이어 "과학기술은 국가 존망을 좌우할 만큼 각 분야에서 빼놓을 수 없는 의제가 되었고, 국가 안보에도 지대한 영향을 미치는 등 미래 산업의 핵심 인프라가 됐다"고 강조했다.
신 대변인은 또한 "과학기술이 국가경쟁력의 핵심 원천이라는 확신을 바탕으로, 이전보다 더욱 과감하고 치열한 정책과 아낌없는 투자가 필요하다"고 말하며, "기초 연구 지원 강화와 국가연구개발 예산의 양과 질 향상, R&D 집중 투자를 통해 과학기술 발전에 사활을 걸어야 한다"고 정부에 요청했다.
그러면서 "국민의힘 역시 대한민국이 과학 강국으로 도약할 수 있도록 모든 당력을 집중하겠다"며, "젊은 과학인들이 자부심을 갖고 열정적으로 연구에 임할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고, 신속한 연구개발을 위한 예타 폐지 후속 절차 마련, 재정건전성과 기획 완성도를 위한 보완책 구상 등 입법 절차에도 박차를 가하겠다"고 했다.
