[브레이크뉴스=양영석 기자] 2천년 역사를 품은 김해 ‘장군차’ 햇차 수확이 본격화하고 있다.
21일 김해시에 따르면 관내 장군차 재배농가에서 지난 19일부터 햇차 수확이 시작됐다. 지난 겨울 안정적인 기온과 봄철 양호한 생육 환경 속에서 수확이 이뤄져 전년보다 품질이 우수할 것으로 기대된다.
장군차는 서기 48년 가야 수로왕의 왕비 허황옥이 인도에서 가져온 차 씨앗에서 유래한 것으로 전해지며, 우리나라 최초의 전통차라는 역사적 가치를 지니고 있다.
이러한 유래 때문에 김해지역에서 오랜 기간 재배·계승돼온 장군차는 단순한 농산물을 넘어 지역의 문화와 정체성을 담은 상징적인 작목으로 자리매김했다.
특히 장군차는 일반 녹차보다 잎이 크고 두꺼운 ‘대엽종’으로, 카테킨과 아미노산, 각종 미네랄 함량이 풍부한 것이 특징이다.
다른 차에 비해 떫은맛이 적고 단맛과 감칠맛이 뛰어나며, 100℃ 뜨거운 물에서도 깊은 풍미를 유지하는 등 차별화된 품질을 자랑한다.
이러한 우수성을 바탕으로 장군차는 세계차연합회(WTU) 국제명차품평대회에서 최고상을 수상하고 다년간 대한민국 ‘올해의 명차’로 선정되는 등 국내외에서 그 가치를 인정받고 있다.
