필자는 1980년 선데이서울(발행처=서울신문)에 1년간 기고(寄稿)를 했었다. 그 시절, 선데이서울은 유명했던 주간 잡지였다. 여수 출신, 김병규 부장이 데스크였다. 서울대 법대를 졸업한 김병규 부장이 선데이서울의 데스크 였다. 내가 호남출신 프리랜서라고, 그 분이 날 잘 봐주셨다.
선데이서울의 지가(紙價)를 올려준 민완기자는 김두호 차장(당시)이었다. 매주 영화계에서 생긴 특종을 낚아 올렸다. 필자는 사회 문제를 추적하는 사회 밑바닥 기사를 쓰는 프리랜서 였을 뿐이다.
나는 선데이서울의 민완(敏腕)기자인 김두호 차장님을 '형님'이라고 부른다. 왜 나의 친형(1945년 생)의 나이와 같았기 때문이다. 이 분은 말 그대로 민완 기자(기사를 빠르게 처리하는 기자)였다. 그래서, 이 분에게서 배운 바가 많다.
시간이 흐르면서 스포츠 서울 부국장, 굿데이 전무, 공중파 방송의 출연자 등의 과정을 거쳤다. 지금은 '인터뷰 365(인터넷신문)'의 발행인이다. 서울신문의 사우회 회장을 지냈고, 요즈음은 대한언론인클럽 부회장을 맡고 있다. 한국 언론계의 큰 기둥이다.

며칠 전, 이 분이 내 눈에서 눈물을 빼는, 일을 만들었다. 서울 프레스센터에서 필자의 회사까지는 걸어서 30여 분이 걸린다. 프레스센터에서 필자의 회사까지, 손에 파리바게트 빵을 사들고, 그 먼 거리를 걸어서 온 것이다.
“형님, 바쁘신 분인데, 어찌 오셨어요?”
“느닷없이, 문일석 발행인이 보고 싶어서 왔소~"
“커피라도 한 잔 드시고 가세요.”
“아니오, 보고 싶은 사람 봤으니 그냥 가겠소~”
그 날, 그 분은 그렇게 휙 떠나셨다. 눈물이 핑 돌았다. 내가 뭐라고. 지난 53년간, 글만을 써온 나약한 후배였던, 나의 그날 심경은 그랬다.
친구 사이로 지내고 있는 김주덕 변호사님이 최근 페이스북에 올린 “우리의 삶은 다수의 군중에 의해 좌우되기보다, 단 한 사람과의 만남에 의해 극적으로 달라질 수 있다. 그러므로 인생에서 가장 중요한 것은, 무엇보다 사람을 잘 만나는 것”이라는 말이, 나의 무딘 가슴에 와 닿았다. 뭔지 모르겠으나, 내 눈에서는 그날 눈물, 그런 게 나왔다.
“나의 인생에서, 나는 김두호 형님을 잘 만났습니다. 형님은 경상도 출신이고, 난 전라도 출신입니다. 출신 지역을 떠나, 정말로 인간형님을 존경합니다~ .”
필자는 4월22일 저녁, 서울 중구 충무로 인현식당 골목의 오리고기 집에서 김두호 형님을 만났다. 맛있는 빵을 멀리서 들고 와, 나에게 인간적인 따스함을 전해준, 달콤함의 품앗이를 했다. moonilsuk@naver.com
