인도 꼴카타의 숙소가 있는 골목의 현지인들이 말하길 스스로 자신들을 벵갈인이라고 했다. 벵갈은 이곳 언어고 벵골은 영문식 발음이다. 이들은 기존의 힌두어 말고 벵골어가 따로 있고 벵골 문자(বাঙালি)라 불리는 방갈라라는 문자를 쓴다.벵갈이라는 뜻은 브리흐만어로 "깊이 들어간 땅" 이라는 뜻이다. 벵갈, 벵골의 갈과 골은 들어가다라는 뜻이 있는데 우리 말로 움푹 들어간 것을 "골이졌다", "골이 파였다"와 같은 뜻이라 보면 된다.
벵이라는 말은 "혼란스러운", "혼돈" 이라는 뜻도 갖고 있는데 우리말로 "벵벵 돌았다" 와 유사한 뜻과 음원이라 보면 된다. 하나하나 의미를 되새김해 보면 이상하게 우리말과 연관되는 부분이 많은것 같다. 벵골인들이 많이 사는곳, 벵골인의 땅이라는 뜻은 방글라데시다. 이들은 대체로 인도-아리안계로 몽골-티베트계와 대치되는 혈통이다. 바로 옆국가 미얀마의 조상인 몽골-티베트계 민족에 대해 끊임없는 투쟁을 통해 벵골 땅과 민족을 지켜왔다.
물론 그들도 겐지스 문화를 정복한 아리안 정복민족이긴 하지만 무려 2,500년간 뱅골을 지켜왔다는 자부심 하나는 대단하다. 꼴까타 시내를 돌아다니는 겉보기에 고풍스러운 택시들은 영국 식민지 시기의 차량을 모방한 택시들인데 고풍스러워 타볼만 하지만 미터기가 없어 흥정해야 한다. 게다가 에어콘도 없고 뜨거운 여름을 창문 열고 다닌다. 골까타도 지금 40도를 오르내리는 무더위가 진행 중이다. 숨이 턱 막힐 정도로 습도도 쎄다.
