인생이란, 쓴 것인가요? 아니면 달콤한 것인가요? 아니면 시원한 것인가요? 의문입니다. 살면서 인생을 묵상하게 됩니다. 인생에 대한 나의 의견이 달콤함 쪽으로 기울어 있습니다.

늘 마시는 물도 어느 땐가는 달콤하다고 느낄 때가 있었습니다. 솥단지에서 밥을 퍼내고 눌러 붙어있는 누룽지를 놔둔 채로 끓이면 구수한 숭늉이 됩니다. 인생이 숭늉처럼 느껴질 때도 있었습니다. 사카린을 탄 물을 마신 적이 있습니다. 달콤합니다. 인생이 이런 때도 있었습니다. 1985년 미국의 하와이에 갔었습니다. 1903년 미국 하와이 목구리아로 이민 간 한인들을 발자취를 취재하기 위해서였습니다. 이때 이민 간 한인들은 사탕수수 농장에서 일했습니다. 한인 미주 이민사(필자는 미국한인 미국 이민사 '미국귀신 한국귀신'의 저자임) 관련 취재를 하면서, 취재현장에서 사탕수수를 씹어봤습니다. 매우 달콤했습니다. 인생이 이런 때도 있었습니다.

서울에 정착했을 때 베란다에서 양봉을 한 적이 있었습니다. 이때 채밀기로 꿀을 채취해서, 꿀을 먹었던 기억이 있습니다. 꿀이야말로 달콤했습니다. 인생이 이런 적이 있었습니다. 내가 생각하는 나의 인생은 여전히 달콤합니다.

필자는 고등학교를 농업고등학교를 졸업했는데, 그 시절 ,학교의 영농장학생으로 꽃들도 키워봤습니다. 필자는 요즘, 아주 달콤한 일들을 하고 있습니다.

필자의 회사는 일제 강점기 전성 시기인 1936년에 완공된, 올해 89년째인 일본식 목조(木造) 건물입니다. 일본의 오키나와 성을 닮았습니다. 한민족 일제 강점시기-아픈 역사의 한 중심 시절, 그 때에 지어진 건물입니다. 비록 일본인 전문 목수들이 지은 건물이긴 하지만, 이 건물을 미워할 일은 없다고 생각합니다. 제 견해로는 건물, 그 자체가 아름다운 건물이라고 생각합니다.

서울은 이제 글로벌 국제도시가 됐습니다. 서울 중구의 명동-충무로 일대를 가 보십시오. 외국인들이 붐빕니다. 서울의 세계화, 아름다운 서울을 방문하는 국제인들에게 아름다운 서울의 곳곳을 보여줄 시대가 됐습니다.

이런 취지에 적극 찬동하면서, 필자는 지난해부터 필자 신문사 자체 사옥의 건물 외부에 조각품들을 비치하고, 꽃들을 심어 아름답게 꾸미기 시작했습니다. 얼마나 아름다워 질지는 잘 모릅니다. 하지만, 가다가 그치지만 않는다면, 조금씩 아름다움을 더해 갈 것입니다. 자연의 향연(饗筵)이다. 꽃들은 꽃피움에 새들이 화답(和答)했다. 그리하여 아름다운 공간-명소가 될 것입니다.

자연은 제 스스로 빛을 발합니다. 발광(發光) 합니다. 꽃들이 여유(餘裕) 자적(自適)하며 자라는, 사옥의 정원에 있는, 키가 아주 큰 나무들, 그 가지들에는 까치 등의 새와 이름 모를 새들이 자주 와서, 지저귑니다. 저만의 목소리를 뽐내며, 노래합니다. 꽃의 향(香) 때문인지, 어디선가로부터 나비들도 날라 옵니다. 벌들이 꿀을 따러 방문합니다. 사옥은 서울시 상수도국과 닿아있는데, 상수도국 정원의 넓이 400여 평에 심어져, 보기 좋게 우거진, 각종 정원수들과 어울려 아름다움을 더해줍니다.

자사(自社) 사옥(社屋)을 소유한 대한민국의 인터넷 신문사 가운데 “브레이크뉴스 사옥이 가장 아름다운 사옥 중의 하나”라고, 자부합니다. 더욱 더 아름다워지도록 노력하겠습니다.
