제19회 전국장애학생체육대회가 지난 13일부터 16일까지 경남 김해시 일원에서 열렸다. 이 대회에서 대전맹학교(교장 문성준)는 골볼과 육상 트랙 종목에 출전해 금메달 2개, 은메달 1개의 성과를 거두며 눈부신 활약을 펼쳤다.
올해 대전시 선수단은 금메달 7개 획득을 목표로 출전했지만, 대전맹학교의 파죽지세와 같은 선전이 더해지며 최종적으로 금 14, 은 12, 동 10개 등 총 36개의 메달을 수확하며, 대회를 마무리했다.
무더운 체육관을 뚫고 터져 나온 첫 금메달은 골볼에서 나왔다. 시각장애 학생들이 출전하는 이 종목에서 대전맹학교는 창단 이래 처음으로 정상에 오르며 새로운 역사를 써내려갔다.

올해 졸업을 앞둔 이승준 선수를 중심으로, 김대엽·이정훈·한종민·최명호·박강민으로 구성된 선수단은 예선 첫 경기에서 전북맹학교를 10대2로 꺾으며 산뜻하게 출발했다.
이어진 2차전에서는 전년도 챔피언이자 강력한 우승후보였던 서울맹학교를 맞아 12대2로 콜드게임 승리를 따내며, 작년 제18회 장애학생체전 준우승의 아쉬움을 시원하게 날려 보냈다.
결승에서는 예선에서 만났던 전북을 다시 상대했다. 대전은 시작 30분 만에 10점을 쓸어 담으며 또 한 번 콜드게임 승리를 기록, ‘전 경기 완승’이라는 완벽한 성적으로 대회 '첫 골볼 우승'을 이뤄냈다.
이승준 선수는 “마지막 대회라는 각오로 임했기 때문에 서울을 반드시 이기고 싶었다”며 “대회 내내 응원해주신 선생님들께 진심으로 감사드린다”고 벅찬 소감을 밝혔다.

트랙 위에서도 대전맹학교의 저력은 빛을 발했다. 고등학교 1학년인 최평관 학생은 이번 대회에서 금메달 1개, 은메달 1개를 목에 걸며 육상 트랙 종목의 스타로 다시 한 번 떠올랐다. 지난해 100m와 200m에서 2관왕에 올랐던 그는 올해도 꾸준한 기량을 과시하며 대전 선수단의 사기를 끌어올렸다.
최평관 학생은 “2개의 메달을 딸 수 있어서 무척 기쁘다”며 “항상 용기를 북돋아 주신 가족, 선생님들, 그리고 대전장애인육상연맹 지도자분들께 감사드린다”고 말했다.
대회 준비를 위한 과정은 결코 쉽지 않았다. 수업이 끝난 뒤에도 체육교사들과 함께 훈련에 매진하며, 반복적인 고된 훈련을 이겨냈다. 이러한 학생들의 끈기와 선생님들의 헌신적 지도는 결국 값진 성과로 이어졌다.
