도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 19일(현지시간) 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령과의 통화 당시 "이 일(우크라이나전쟁)을 그만해야 할 때라고 했다"며 "그가 (전쟁을) 멈추길 원한다고 믿는다고 말했다"고 밝혔다.
AP통신 보도에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 경찰 등 법집행 담당자들 희생을 기리는 행사에 참석해 이같이 말한 후 '푸틴 대통령에게 만나자고 했느냐'는 질의에 "무엇에 관해?"라고 반문 후 기자가 "우크라이나에 관해"라고 답하자 "물론 했고, 그것에 대해 그에게 얘기했다"고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "나는 무엇인가가 일어날 걸로 생각하며 만약 그렇지 않다면 나는 물러설 것'이라며 "그들(러·우크라)은 계속 (전쟁을) 이어가야 할 것"이라고 했다.
이어 '우크라이나전쟁 종식을 위한 중재 노력에 한계선이 있느냐'는 질의엔 "어떤 선은 있다고 말하겠다"며 "나는 그 선이 무엇인지 말하고 싶진 않고 그렇게 하면 협상이 더 어려워질 것이기 때문"이라고 말했다.
또 볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령에 대해선 "강한 남자"라며 "젤렌스키 대통령 역시 전쟁을 끝내길 원한다"고 했다.
더불어 이날 저녁 자신이 이사장을 맡고 있는 워싱턴DC 대표 공연장 케네디센터 이사회 만찬 행사 연설에서 "(오늘) 블라디미르 푸틴이란 이름의 멋진 신사와 좋은 대화를 했다"며 "진전이 이뤄지고 있다 생각한다"고 말했다고 백악관 공동 취재단이 전했다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 이날 조 바이든 전 대통령의 암 진단 사실에 대한 언론 질의에 "매우 슬프다. (바이든 발병 사실이) 대중에게 오래전 공지되지 않았다는 점에 대해 놀랐다"고 말했다.
또 "그런 위험한 단계에 이르려면 수년은 걸린다"며 바이든 전 대통령이 재임 중 자동 전자서명 기계 오토펜(autopen)을 사용한 건 "매우 큰 문제가 되고 있다"고 지적했다.
그러면서 "그들(민주당 등 정치적 반대 세력)이 날 그냥 내버려두고 부정 선거를 하지 않았다면 (2021년 1월∼2025년 1월 제46대 대통령 임기를 마치고) 지금 은퇴한 상태일 것"이라고 했다.
이어 "나는 행복하게 무엇인가 다른 일을 하고 있을 뻔 했는데 그들이 내가 4년 더 (대통령직을) 하게 만들었다"고 덧붙였다.

Meanwhile, in response to a press question about former President Joe Biden's cancer diagnosis, President Trump said, "I am very sad. "I was surprised that (Biden's illness) wasn't announced to the public long ago," he said.
He also said, "It takes years to get to that dangerous stage," and pointed out that former President Biden's use of an autopen, an automatic electronic signature machine, while in office was "a very big problem."
He added, "If they (the Democratic Party and other political opponents) had just left me alone and not rigged the election, I would be retired now (after finishing the 46th presidential term from January 2021 to January 2025)."
He added, "I would have been happily doing something else, but they made me stay (in office) for four more years."
