황만기키본한의원 황만기 대표원장이 ‘제60회 발명의 날’ 기념식에서 산업통상자원부 장관 표창을 수상했다. 한의사 개인이 이 상을 받은 것은 이번이 처음이다.
지난 5월 19일 서울 코엑스 마곡 컨벤션센터에서 열린 제60회 발명의 날 기념식에서, 황 원장은 식물성 한약을 기반으로 한 치료기술의 개발 및 관련 연구성과에 대한 공로를 인정받아 산업통상자원부 장관 표창을 받았다.
‘발명의 날’은 조선 세종 때 세계 최초로 강우량 측정기인 측우기를 발명한 날(1441년 5월 19일)을 기념하기 위해 1957년 제정된 국가기념일이다. 이 기념식은 특허청이 주최하고 한국발명진흥회가 주관하며, 정부 포상은 관련 위원회의 심사와 행정 절차를 거쳐 확정된다.
‘한약 기반 치료기술’로 특허 8건
황 원장은 키 성장, 골절, 골다공증, 아토피, 인지기능 향상 등 다섯 개 분야를 중심으로 한약 기반 치료기술을 개발해 왔으며, 이와 관련된 8건의 국내 특허를 보유하고 있다. 일부 기술은 현재 미국 특허 출원도 진행 중이다.
그는 해당 분야에 대해 14편의 SCI·KCI 논문을 발표했으며, 임상사례 및 연구결과를 담은 단행본도 발간해 왔다. 특히 접골탕(接骨湯) 관련 연구는 국립 한국한의약진흥원의 연구과제로 선정돼 골다공증 개선 효능 및 기전 연구를 수행한 바 있다.
황 원장은 이번 산업부 장관 표창 외에도, 2024년 ‘아시아 로하스(Asia LOHAS, ESG) 산업대전’에서 특허청장상을 수상했으며, 2023년에는 한국일보사 주최 ‘대한민국 우수특허 대상’(생명공학 부문)을 받았다. 또한, 제12회 ‘대평 남종현 발명문화대상’에서도 한의사 개인으로는 처음으로 대상을 수상했다.
대학 강의 및 사회적 활동도 병행
황 원장은 서강대학교 겸임교수로 활동하며, 2020년부터 ‘건강과 한의학’, ‘사상의학의 이해’ 등의 강의를 통해 대학생을 대상으로 한의학의 원리를 소개해 왔다. 또한 국립 한국한의약진흥원 자문위원으로 참여해 한의약 표준화·공공자원화 사업에도 협력하고 있다.
황 원장은 이번 수상에 대해 “지속적인 임상 사례와 과학적 자료를 바탕으로 한약 기반 치료기술의 가능성을 평가받게 돼 의미가 크다”며 “앞으로도 관련 기술이 치료 및 예방 분야에서 실효성을 갖출 수 있도록 연구를 이어가겠다”고 밝혔다.
또한, “최근에는 ‘골 면역학(Osteoimmunology)’ 기반 접근을 바탕으로 식물성 천연물의 다중작용 기전을 분석하는 연구도 병행하고 있다”며, “임상 활용과 과학적 검증을 병행하는 방향으로 발전해 나가고자 한다”고 덧붙였다.

This recognition acknowledges his groundbreaking research in developing 'Jeopgol-tang,' a plant-based herbal medicine that has shown significant efficacy in treating osteoporosis. This marks the first time an individual Korean medicine practitioner has received this prestigious award.
Pioneering Research in Herbal Medicine for Diverse Conditions
The award ceremony took place on May 19th at the 60th Invention Day Anniversary, held at the COEX Magok Convention Center in Seoul. Dr. Hwang was lauded for his significant contributions to the development of plant-based herbal treatment technologies and their related research achievements.
"Invention Day" is a national commemorative day established in 1957 to celebrate the invention of the world's first rain gauge, the Cheugugi, during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty (May 19, 1441). The event is hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association, with government awards confirmed through a rigorous committee review and administrative process.
Dr. Hwang has been at the forefront of developing TKM-based treatment technologies across five key areas: growth enhancement, fracture healing, osteoporosis, atopic dermatitis, and cognitive function improvement. He holds eight domestic patents related to these technologies, with some currently undergoing patent application in the United States.
Extensive Research and Academic Contributions
His dedication to advancing TKM is evident in his prolific academic output, which includes 14 SCI and KCI papers on these specialized fields. He has also authored books detailing his clinical cases and research findings. Notably, his research on Jeopgol-tang was selected as a research project by the National Korean Medicine Clinical Research Center, leading to studies on its efficacy and mechanisms for improving osteoporosis.
Beyond the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy commendation, Dr. Hwang's contributions have garnered significant recognition. In 2024, he received the Commissioner of the Korean Intellectual Property Office Award at the Asia LOHAS (ESG) Industry Fair. In 2023, he was honored with the "Grand Prize for Excellent Patents in Korea" (Biotechnology sector) organized by The Korea Times. Furthermore, he was the first individual Korean medicine practitioner to receive the Grand Prize at the 12th "Daepyeong Nam Jong-hyun Invention Culture Awards."
Bridging Academia and Clinical Practice
Dr. Hwang is also actively involved in academia, serving as an adjunct professor at Sogang University. Since 2020, he has been educating university students on the principles of TKM through courses such as "Health and Korean Medicine" and "Understanding Sasang Constitutional Medicine." He also contributes to the standardization and public resource initiatives of Korean medicine as an advisor to the National Korean Medicine Clinical Research Center.
Reflecting on his recent award, Dr. Hwang stated, "It is very meaningful to have the potential of herbal medicine-based treatment technologies recognized through continuous clinical cases and scientific data. I will continue my research to ensure these technologies prove effective in both treatment and prevention." He added, "Recently, I have also been conducting research that analyzes the multi-action mechanisms of plant-based natural products based on an 'Osteoimmunology' approach, aiming to advance in a direction that integrates clinical application with scientific verification."
