충남 서산시가 순국선열과 호국영령의 희생정신을 기리며 보훈의 가치를 되새겼다.
이완섭 시장을 비롯한 보훈단체 관계자들은 23일 국립대전현충원을 찾아 제70회 현충일을 기념하는 참배 행사를 진행했다.
이번 참배는 상이군경회, 전몰군경유족회, 6.25참전유공자회, 월남전참전자회 등 서산지역 보훈단체 회원 30여 명이 함께해 의미를 더했다.
참석자들은 현충탑을 시작으로 제2연평해전, 천안함 46용사, 연평도 포격전 전사자 묘역을 찾아 일일이 헌화하고 묵념하며 깊은 존경을 표했다.
특히, 이날 참배에는 장정교 국립대전현충원장이 직접 집례를 맡아 서산시의 지속적인 보훈 활동에 감사의 뜻을 전하며, 국가를 위한 희생을 잊지 않겠다는 다짐을 함께했다.
서산시는 매년 보훈단체뿐 아니라 지역 청년과 학생들도 함께 현충원을 찾는 ‘보훈 동행’을 이어오고 있다. 지난 4월에는 서일고등학교 학생 170여 명과 함께 서해수호관을 방문해 젊은 세대가 직접 국가 수호의 의미를 체험하는 교육의 장을 마련하기도 했다.
이완섭 시장은 “보훈은 단발적인 행사가 아닌, 공동체 전체가 이어가야 할 지속적인 약속”이라며 “국가유공자와 유가족이 존중받고 예우받는 사회 분위기를 조성하는 것이 곧 시민 모두의 자부심이 될 것”이라고 강조했다.
서산시는 보훈 정책에서도 선도적인 행보를 보이고 있다. 지난해에는 참전명예수당을 전국 기초지자체 중 최고 수준인 월 50만 원으로 인상했으며, 복지 사각지대를 해소하기 위해 생활보조수당 특례 제도도 도입했다.
이 같은 노력의 결실로 서산시는 지난 3월 국가보훈부로부터 ‘참전유공자 예우 우수기관’으로 선정된 바 있다.
