정치의 중심축이 빠르게 이동하고 있다. 대의보다 민생, 이념보다 성과. 2025년 대선 정국의 핵심 키워드는 ‘실력’과 ‘실행력’이다. 이재명 더불어민주당 대통령 후보가 내건 ‘AI 세계 3대 강국 도약’이라는 비전은, 뜬구름이 아니라 골목골목을 누비며 쌓은 현장의 목소리에서 비롯됐다. 그 최전선에는 서영교 의원이 있다.
서영교 대구·경북 골목골목 선대위원장이 한손엔 AI 스타트업의 호소를, 다른 손엔 전통시장 상인들의 기대를 쥐고 3박 4일의 대장정을 마쳤다. 혁신의 상징인 스타트업과 민생의 상징인 재래시장이 맞닿은 곳, 그 접점에 ‘이재명’이 있었다.
지난 5월 23일, 대구창조경제혁신센터에서 스타트업 간담회가 열렸다. 이 자리엔 김부겸 총괄선대위원장을 비롯해 허소 대구시당 총괄선대위원장, 박정희 대구 북구(갑) 지역위원장 등 여럿이 함께했지만, 기업인들은 ‘실질적인 변화’를 주도할 이재명 후보에게 눈을 돌렸다.
“대기업이 부족해 생태계가 협소합니다.” “GPU 자원이 너무 비쌉니다.” “데이터셋 공동 구축에 국가가 나서야 합니다.”
스타트업 대표들의 호소는 단순한 정책 건의가 아니었다. AI 패권 경쟁이 세계 경제의 주도권을 좌우하는 이 시점에서, 지방의 혁신 기업들은 사활을 걸고 목소리를 냈다. 이는 단순한 ‘벤처 육성’이 아니라, 대한민국 미래산업의 중심을 누가 설계하느냐의 문제다.
서 의원은 “문재인 정부에서 소·부·장(소재·부품·장비) 산업 자립도를 키웠듯, 이제는 AI 산업 주권의 시대”라며 “AI 고속도로 구축과 GPU 자원 확보를 위한 제도 개선에 국회가 적극 나서겠다”고 약속했다. 이는 곧 이재명 후보의 공약과도 일맥상통한다. AI 예산 비중 확대, 고성능 GPU 5만개 확보, 국가 AI 데이터 클러스터 조성 등은 글로벌 AI 경쟁에 뛰어들기 위한 ‘정치의 역할’ 그 자체다.
혁신도 중요하지만, 결국 정치는 표심으로 완성된다. 3박 4일간 서 의원이 누빈 곳은 대구·경북의 골목·골목, 시장·시장이다. 경북 영주와 예천, 낯선 이방인이라면 외면할 법한 지역 민심은 달랐다.
“기호 1번 이재명, 진짜 일할 사람입니다!” 서 의원의 목소리는 높았지만, 주민들의 반응은 더 뜨거웠다. 지나가는 차량이 경적을 울리고, 창문 밖으로 엄지손가락을 내밀었으며, 아이 셋을 데리고 파란 옷을 입고 나온 한 시민은 “서영교TV 보고 왔다”며 지지를 표현했다.

서 의원은 “경북의 아들 이재명이 대한민국을 살릴 수 있다”고 강조했다. 유세장의 말은 상투적일 수 있지만, 성남시장과 경기도지사를 거치며 96% 공약 이행률을 기록한 이재명 후보에겐 그것이 곧 ‘팩트’다. ‘실력 중심 정치’를 앞세운 이 후보의 전략은 산업 전략과 민생 전략을 하나로 묶는 시도로 읽힌다.
이번 대선에서 눈여겨볼 지점은 바로 ‘정치의 감각’이다. 대구·경북은 여전히 보수 텃밭으로 불리지만, 그 안에서도 변화의 조짐이 뚜렷하다. AI 스타트업 생태계는 자율과 혁신을, 전통시장은 실질과 효용을 요구한다. 이는 이념의 문제가 아니라, 누가 실제로 일을 해낼 수 있는가에 대한 냉정한 판단이다.

Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung's vision of 'Korea's leap to become one of the top three AI powers' didn't come out of thin air; it originated from the voices heard on the ground, traversing every alleyway. At the forefront of this effort is Representative Seo Young-kyo.
Representative Seo Young-kyo, the campaign committee chair for the Daegu-Gyeongbuk alleyways, concluded a four-day journey, carrying the pleas of AI startups in one hand and the hopes of traditional market vendors in the other. Where the symbol of innovation (startups) meets the symbol of livelihoods (traditional markets), 'Lee Jae-myung' was at the intersection.
On May 23, a startup meeting was held at the Daegu Creative Economy Innovation Center. While several figures, including General Campaign Chairman Kim Boo-kyum, Daegu City Party General Campaign Chairman Huh So, and Daegu Buk-gu (Gap) Regional Chairman Park Jung-hee, were present, entrepreneurs turned their attention to candidate Lee Jae-myung, who they believe will drive 'practical change.'
"The ecosystem is narrow due to a lack of large corporations." "GPU resources are too expensive." "The government needs to step in for joint dataset construction."
The appeals from startup representatives were not mere policy suggestions. At a time when AI hegemony competition dictates global economic leadership, local innovative companies voiced their concerns with their very survival at stake. This isn't just about 'nurturing ventures'; it's about who designs the future industries of South Korea.
Representative Seo promised, "Just as the Moon Jae-in administration fostered self-reliance in the materials, parts, and equipment (Soo-Boo-Jang) industries, now is the era of AI industrial sovereignty." She added, "The National Assembly will actively work on institutional improvements for building an AI highway and securing GPU resources." This directly aligns with candidate Lee Jae-myung's pledges. Expanding the AI budget, securing 50,000 high-performance GPUs, and establishing national AI data clusters are precisely the 'role of politics' to jump into global AI competition.
Innovation is crucial, but ultimately, politics is completed by voter sentiment. For four days, Representative Seo traversed the alleyways and markets of Daegu and Gyeongbuk. In regions like Yeongju and Yecheon in Gyeongbuk, where a stranger might be overlooked, the local sentiment was different.
"Candidate Lee Jae-myung, Number 1, is a true worker!" Representative Seo's voice was loud, but the residents' reactions were even more fervent. Passing cars honked, thumbs popped out of windows, and one citizen, dressed in blue with three children, expressed support, saying, "I came after watching Seo Young-kyo TV."
Representative Seo emphasized, "Lee Jae-myung, the son of Gyeongbuk, can save South Korea." While campaign speeches can be conventional, for candidate Lee Jae-myung, who recorded a 96% fulfillment rate of his pledges as Seongnam Mayor and Gyeonggi Province Governor, those words are 'facts.' Candidate Lee's strategy, prioritizing 'competence-driven politics,' is interpreted as an attempt to integrate industrial and livelihood strategies.
A point to watch in this presidential election is the 'political sense.' Daegu and Gyeongbuk are still considered conservative strongholds, but clear signs of change are emerging within them. The AI startup ecosystem demands autonomy and innovation, while traditional markets require practicality and utility. This is not a matter of ideology; it's a sober judgment about who can actually get the job done.
Representative Seo's listening tour is not just a simple election campaign. It's a 'political experiment' to transform Daegu and Gyeongbuk into industrial and technological hubs, and a litmus test to gauge whether candidate Lee Jae-myung's working-class politics can truly resonate.
Building an AI data center and securing residential welfare budgets for Yecheon County might seem far apart, but they lead to the same question:
"Who, indeed, can properly run the country in this complex era?" Representative Seo sought the answer to that question in the alleyways of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and candidate Lee responded with his achievements and pledges.
Politics, they say, is ultimately the art of changing reality.
