한수원은 지난 23일 경주 방사선보건원에서 오클로와 업무협약(MOU)을 체결했으며, 26일 본사에서 협력 방안을 구체화하는 실무회의를 진행했다.
이번 협약을 통해 양사는 오클로가 건설 예정인 ‘오로라 파워하우스(Aurora powerhouse)’의 표준설계 개발과 검증, 주요기기 제작성 평가, BOP(주변기기) 공급망 구축, 시공성 평가 등 상업화를 위한 다양한 분야에서 협력할 계획이다.
오클로는 고속로(fast reactor) 기반의 차세대 원자로 기술을 개발 중이며, 현재 미국 아이다호국립연구소(INL) 부지에 75MWe급 Aurora 고속로 건설을 목표로 인허가 절차를 밟고 있다.
미국 원자력규제위원회(NRC)는 사전 준비평가를 시작했으며, 오클로는 올해 말까지 건설·운영이 통합된 ‘결합허가(Combined Operating License)’를 신청할 예정이다.
황주호 한수원 사장은 “국내 i-SMR의 경쟁력을 세계 최고 수준으로 끌어올리는 한편, 차세대 SMR 시장 진출을 위한 기술 개발과 선도기업과의 협력이 중요하다”며, “한수원과 오클로의 강점이 결합되면 설계부터 운영까지 큰 시너지를 낼 수 있을 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이번 협력은 한수원의 글로벌 SMR 전략 강화의 일환으로, 세계 원전 시장에서의 기술 리더십 확보와 신시장 개척을 위한 중요한 전환점이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (President Hwang Joo-ho) is accelerating the development of 4th generation small modular reactor (SMR) technology through cooperation with U.S. next-generation SMR developer Oklo.
On the 23rd, KHNP signed a business agreement (MOU) with Oklo at the Gyeongju Radiation Health Center, and held a working-level meeting to specify the cooperation plan at its headquarters on the 26th.
Through this agreement, the two companies plan to cooperate in various areas for commercialization, such as standard design development and verification, evaluation of the manufacturability of major equipment, establishment of a BOP (peripheral equipment) supply chain, and construction evaluation of the ‘Aurora Powerhouse’ scheduled to be built by Oklo.
Oklo is developing next-generation reactor technology based on fast reactors and is currently in the licensing process with the goal of building a 75MWe Aurora fast reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) site in the United States.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has begun a pre-assessment, and Oklo plans to apply for a combined operating license (COL) that integrates construction and operation by the end of this year.
Hwang Joo-ho, President of KHNP, said, “While raising the competitiveness of domestic i-SMRs to the world’s best level, it is important to develop technologies and collaborate with leading companies to enter the next-generation SMR market,” and “If the strengths of KHNP and Oklo are combined, we will be able to create great synergy from design to operation.”
This collaboration is expected to be an important turning point for securing technological leadership in the global nuclear power plant market and pioneering new markets as part of KHNP’s strengthening of its global SMR strategy.
