이시바 시게루 일본 총리가 4일 이재명 대통령 당선에 대해 "한국 민주주의 결과로 한국 국민 선택에 경의를 표하며 취임을 축하한다"고 밝혔다.
연합뉴스에 따르면 이시바 총리는 이날 오전 총리 관저에서 취재진과 만나 "올해가 한·일 국교 정상화 60주년"이라며 "민간 포함 한·일 교류를 더욱 활발히 해 나가고 싶다"고 밝혔다.
그러면서 "한·일 양국이 급속한 저출산·고령화·인구 수도권 집중·미국과 동맹 관계를 포함한 외교·안보 정책 등 공통 과제가 많다"며 "한·일 수교 60주년 계기로 이재명 대통령과 한·일-한·미·일 협력을 활발히 하고 싶고, 그게 60주년의 큰 의의"라고 말했다.
또 과거 이 대통령의 일본에 대한 비판적 발언과 관련해선 "한국 내 여론도 있다"며 "선거 운동 과정에선 일본을 중요 파트너라 했으며 일본을 좋아한다고도 했다"고 말했다.
이어 "일본은 정말로 한국과 흉금 터놓고 민간을 포함 적극적으로 교류해 연결고리를 강하게 하고자 한다"며 "정부가 노력할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
더불어 "한·일 정상회담은 조속히 하는 게 좋다"며 "양국 정상이 정기적으로 상대국을 오가는 셔틀 외교 중요성은 한국에 어떤 정권이 들어서도 바뀌지 않는다"고 강조했다.
