브레이크뉴스 정민우 기자= 삼성전자가 ‘세계 해양의 날’(6월 8일)을 맞이해 지난 11일 프랑스 니스에서 열린 제3차 유엔해양총회(UNOC)에서 자체 제작 다큐멘터리 ‘코랄 인 포커스(Coral in Focus)’의 시사회를 개최했다.
유엔해양총회는 3년 주기로 해양 분야 전 의제를 논의하고 국제 협력을 모색하는 유엔 최고위급 국제회의로, 선진국과 개도국이 공동 개최한다.
삼성전자가 제작한 ‘코랄 인 포커스’ 다큐멘터리는 산호초 생태계가 처한 위기를 조명하고, 나아가 갤럭시 카메라 기술을 활용한 협력을 통해 해양 생태계 복원에 기여하고 있는 모습을 보여준다.
시사회에는 전 세계 국제기구, 해양학자, 해양활동가 등 관계자 70여 명이 참석했다. 상영 후에는 △삼성전자 북미총괄 지속가능경영 담당 캐시 스미스(Cassie Smith) △미국 캘리포니아대학교 샌디에이고(UCSD) 해양연구소 스크립스(Scripps)의 수석연구원 다니엘 왕프레스어트(Daniel Wangpraseurt) △시트리(Seatrees) 공동설립자 마이클 스튜어트(Michael Stewart) △다큐멘터리 감독 퀜틴 반 덴 보스(Quentin van den Bossche)의 패널 토론도 진행했다.
삼성전자는 지난해부터 미국 캘리포니아대학교 샌디에이고(UCSD)의 해양학 연구소 스크립스(Scripps)와 미국 비영리단체 시트리(Seatrees)와 함께 산호초 복원 프로젝트인 ‘코랄 인 포커스’를 진행하고 있다.
‘코랄 인 포커스’ 프로젝트는 산호초 주요 서식지이자 최근 파괴가 심각한 △미국 플로리다 △인도네시아 발리 △피지 비티레부섬에서 갤럭시 스마트폰으로 바닷속 산호초 사진을 촬영해 산호초의 현재 상태를 모니터링하고 복원 활동에 기여하는 프로젝트다.
삼성전자는 바닷속 산호초 촬영을 위한 카메라용 ‘오션 모드(Ocean Mode)’를 개발했고, 각 지역 활동 단체들은 해당 모드가 탑재된 갤럭시 S24 울트라를 활용해 현지에서 산호초 사진을 촬영하고 있다. 오션모드는 본 프로젝트를 위해 개발된 갤럭시 카메라 모드로, 지역 활동 단체에만 제공되고 있다.
이 프로젝트를 통해 총 17개의 3D 산호초 복원도로 제작됐고, 바닷속 생태계를 관찰하며 새롭게 심어진 산호(coral fragment) 수는 총 1만1046개이며, 1만705㎡의 해양 내 산호초 면적이 복원되는 결과를 얻었다.
