충남 서산시가 생계유지가 어려운 중국인 노숙자에게 따뜻한 손길을 내밀어 고국으로의 귀향을 도왔다.
시는 지난 5일 해미면에서 한 시민의 신고를 받고 현장에 출동하여 중국인 노동자 이 씨(70세, 남)를 발견했다. 현장 상담을 통해 이 씨가 20여 년간 한국에서 일용직으로 생계를 이어왔으나, 지난해 급격한 건강 악화로 일을 할 수 없게 되면서 어려움을 겪고 있음을 파악했다.
이 씨는 일을 할 수 없게 된 후 인근 시군의 교회 등을 전전하다, 한국에서 가장 오래 머물렀던 해미면을 찾아온 것으로 알려졌다.
서산시는 중국으로 돌아가고 싶다는 이 씨의 희망에 따라 즉시 중국대사관과 소통하며 귀국 지원을 요청했다. 또한, 이 씨가 분실한 여권 발급을 위해 시 직원과 사례 관리사가 중국대사관 영사부 방문에 동행하는 등 밀착 지원을 아끼지 않았다.
