함인경 대변인은 18일 두 건의 논평을 통해 김민석 국무총리 후보자를 둘러싼 각종 의혹에 대해 강하게 비판하며 "김 후보자는 국민 앞에 정직하게 사실을 설명할 책임이 있다"고 강조했다.
함 대변인은 "불법 정치자금 수수와 추징금 납부 관련 해명이 여전히 석연치 않은 가운데, 최근에는 모친 소유 빌라의 수상한 임대차 거래 의혹까지 더해졌다"며 "복합적인 의혹이 제기되는 만큼, 총리 후보자는 더 이상 침묵하거나 회피해서는 안 된다"고 밝혔다.
이어 그는 "인사청문회법상 법정 시한을 고려한 일정이라지만, 야당의 요구에도 불구하고 청문회는 고작 이틀로 제한됐고, 후보자의 자료 제출 태도는 무성의로 일관되고 있다"면서 "오늘 예정된 증인·참고인 채택에서도 핵심 인물이 빠진다면, 이는 명백히 검증을 회피하는 것이다. 그런 청문회가 강행된다면, 그것만으로도 총리 후보자로서 부적격임을 입증하는 셈"이라고 날을 세웠다.
함 대변인은 김 후보자의 해명 태도에 대해서도 문제를 제기했다.
그는 "후보자의 해명은 언제나 ‘정치검찰의 표적 사정’, ‘불가피한 선택’이라는 식의 자기변명에 머물고 있다"며 "이는 민주당이 정치적으로 불리할 때마다 반복해온 해묵은 프레임일 뿐, 객관적 사실과 정면으로 마주하려는 태도는 전혀 보이지 않는다"고 비판했다. 그러면서 "국민이 총리 후보자에게 바라는 것은 피해자 서사가 아니라 공직자로서의 책임 있는 설명"이라고 덧붙였다.

함 대변인은 아울러 "수입을 초과한 지출과 소득 없는 자산 형성 의혹에 대해선 단순한 해명이 아니라 구체적인 소득 내역과 과세 증빙을 통해 객관적으로 소명해야 한다"며 "국회의원 재임 중 약 5억 원의 수입이 있다고 해도, 추징금 6억 원, 기부금 2억 원, 수천만 원대 카드 사용액 등을 고려하면 수지가 전혀 맞지 않는다"고 지적했다.
자녀 학비에 관한 의혹에 대해선 "후보자는 고등학교와 대학 학비를 전처가 부담했다고 주장하지만, 당시 전처가 과연 그 학비를 감당할 수 있었는지에 대한 객관적 입증은 전무하다"며 "국민 눈높이에 부합하는 설명을 위해 관련 증인의 출석이 반드시 필요하다"고 했다.
또한 그는 "청문회도 시작되기 전부터 후보자는 마치 총리로 확정된 듯한 발언과 외부 일정을 이어가고 있다"며 "이는 인사청문회를 단지 형식적인 통과의례로 여기는 오만한 인식의 발로"라고 비판했다.
끝으로 함 대변인은 "총리 후보자는 헌법 앞에 겸허하고 책임 있는 자세로 모든 의혹에 답해야 하며, 국민 앞에 성실히 검증받아야 한다"라며 "이재명 대통령 역시 후보자의 성급한 총리 행세를 방치한다면, 국회의 권한과 헌법 질서를 무시하는 태도로 비춰질 수 있음을 명심해야 할 것"이라고 경고했다.
