이번 협약은 한국원자력환경공단의 방폐물 관리 전문성과 한전KPS의 발전설비 운영 역량을 합쳐, 국내 원전 방폐물 처리에 대한 실무 협력 체계를 구축하기 위해 이뤄졌다.
양측은 이번 협약을 통해 방사성폐기물 관리 기술 향상을 위한 정보 교류, 전문 인력 양성을 위한 국내외 교육 프로그램 공동 개발, 그리고 방사성폐기물 관리 현안 논의 및 협력 방향 조율을 위한 실무회의 운영 등에 합의했다.
한국원자력환경공단은 한전KPS와의 협력을 강화해 방폐물 처리 기술의 현장 적용성과 지속가능성을 높일 계획이다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 "양 기관의 강점을 결합해 방폐물 관리의 안전성과 효율성을 더욱 높여 나가겠다"고 밝혔다.
