【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=한국원자력환경공단(이사장 조성돈)이 국제원자력기구(IAEA)와 공동으로 6월 23일부터 27일까지 서울 SKY 31 컨벤션에서 ‘사용후핵연료의 안전한 관리를 위한 국제기술협력 워크숍’을 개최한다.

이번 워크숍은 IAEA가 주관하는 12개국의 국제공동연구인 사용후핵연료 저장시스템의 장기안전성 연구와 7개국이 참여한 사용후핵연료 건전성 유지 연구 등 두 건의 국제공동연구 기술회의로 구성된다.
워크숍에는 우리나라를 비롯해 미국, 스페인, 영국, 캐나다, 러시아, 스위스 등 총 19개국에서 사용후핵연료 운반·저장 분야의 전문가 120여 명이 참석한다. 특히 한국에서는 원자력환경공단을 비롯해 한국원자력연료, 한국수력원자력, 한국원자력연구원 등 주요 공공기관과 ㈜라온넥스텝 등 민간기관도 함께 참여해 국제 기술교류의 폭을 넓힌다.
조성돈 한국원자력환경공단 이사장은 “이번 워크숍은 공단을 중심으로 국내 여러 기관들이 하나의 통합된 협력체계를 구축해 사용후핵연료 안전관리 기술 개발에 나서는 중요한 출발점이 될 것”이라며, “기관 간 실증 데이터와 노하우 공유를 통해 우리나라의 사용후핵연료 관리 기술의 신뢰성과 안전성을 한층 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다”고 밝혔다.
한편, 고준위방사성폐기물은 원전 운영 과정에서 발생하는 사용후핵연료 중 최종 처분이 필요한 방사성폐기물을 의미하며, 한국원자력환경공단은 고준위방폐물 특별법에 따라 방폐물 관리 전담사업자로 지정돼 관련 업무를 수행하고 있다.

Korea Radioactive Waste Agency and IAEA to Hold International Workshop on Spent Fuel Safety Management
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (Chairman Cho Sung-don) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will hold the ‘International Technology Cooperation Workshop for the Safe Management of Spent Fuel’ at the SKY 31 Convention in Seoul from June 23 to 27.
This workshop consists of two international joint research technical conferences: the Long-Term Safety Study of Spent Fuel Storage Systems, an international joint research project led by the IAEA, with 12 countries, and the Study on the Maintenance of Spent Fuel Integrity, with 7 countries participating.
A total of 120 experts in the field of spent fuel transport and storage from 19 countries, including Korea, the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, and Switzerland, will attend the workshop. In particular, major public institutions in Korea, including the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency, Korea Atomic Energy Fuel, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, as well as private institutions such as Laonnexstep Co., Ltd., will participate to expand the scope of international technology exchange.
Cho Seong-don, Chairman of the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency, said, “This workshop will be an important starting point for domestic institutions to establish an integrated cooperative system centered around the Agency and to develop spent nuclear fuel safety management technology,” and added, “We expect that the reliability and safety of our country’s spent nuclear fuel management technology will be further enhanced through the sharing of verification data and know-how among institutions.”
Meanwhile, high-level radioactive waste refers to radioactive waste that requires final disposal among the spent nuclear fuel generated during the operation of nuclear power plants, and the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency is designated as a dedicated radioactive waste management business operator under the Special Act on High-Level Radioactive Waste and is performing related tasks.
