도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령이 27일(현지시간) "나는 그(김정은 북한 국무위원장)와 매우 잘 지내고 있다"며 "갈등이 있다면 북한과의 갈등을 해결할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
영국 '로이터 통신'에 따르면 트럼프 대통령은 이날 오후 워싱턴 백악관 집무실 오벌오피스에서 열린 콩고민주공화국·르완다 외무장관 간 평화 협정 체결 회담 자리에서 '김정은 북한 국무위원장에게 편지를 보냈다는데 사실인가?'란 기자들 질의에 이같이 밝혔다. 이날 회담은 미국 중재로 이뤄졌다.
하지만 트럼프 대통령은 김 위원장에게 서한을 발송했는지 여부에 대해선 명확한 답을 하지 않았다.
그러면서 "나는 김정은과 정말 잘 지내왔고, 그래서 어떻게 될지 지켜봐야겠다"며 "누군가 이걸 잠재적 갈등이라 얘기한다. 나는 (갈등이 있다면) 우리가 해결할 거라 생각한다"고 밝혔다.
또 "만약 분쟁이 발생하더라도 우리와는 무관할 것이다. 다시 말하지만 우리가 문제를 해결하고 있는 많은 지역과 우리는 멀리 떨어져 있으나 나는 이 일(평화중재)을 좋아한다"며 "이 일은 옳은 일이고 우리는 이를 수행할 능력이 있다"고 덧붙였다.
앞서 미 북한전문매체 'NK뉴스'는 '이달 트럼프 대통령이 북한과의 대화 재개를 목표로 김 위원장에게 보낼 서한 초안을 작성했으나 북한 측이 이를 거부했다'고 고위급 소식통을 인용해 보도한 바 있다.
트럼프 대통령은 자신의 지난 제1기 행정부 당시 싱가포르·베트남 하노이·판문점 등에서 김 위원장을 세 차례 만났으나 하노이 회담이 노딜로 끝나면서 교착 상태에 빠진 북·미 간 대화는 그 후 1기 임기 마지막까지 진전 없이 끝난 바 있다.
