당진시, 천연기념물 남생이 합덕제 백련지에 방사…생태적 가치 보전 노력

당진시(시장 오성환)는 지난 6월 28일 합덕제 백련지 일원에서 천연기념물 남생이를 방사했다고 30일 밝혔다. 이번 방사는 (사)한국남생이보호협회와의 업무협약에 따라 추진된 것으로, 2025년부터 협회에서 구조하여 길러온 남생이 10마리가 고향으로 돌아갔다.

합덕제는 '합덕 방죽에 줄남생이 늘어앉듯'이라는 속담에 등장할 만큼 남생이와 깊은 역사적 연관성을 지닌 곳이다. 전국에서 유일하게 속담 속에 지명이 명시된 남생이 서식지로, 이러한 상징성과 생태적 가치를 고려하여 이번 방사가 결정되었다.
