【브레이크뉴스 경주】박희경 기자=경주시는 1일, 우원식 국회의장이 2025 APEC 정상회의 준비 상황을 점검하기 위해 경주를 찾았다고 밝혔다.

이날 우 의장은 화백컨벤션센터(HICO)에서 열린 APEC 준비상황 보고회에 참석해 외교부, 경상북도, 경주시 관계자들과 준비 현황을 공유하고, 현장 관계자들을 격려했다.
이어 HICO 내 정상회의장과 미디어센터를 비롯해 국립경주박물관 만찬장, 경주엑스포 경제전시장, 불국사 문화행사장, PRS호텔(힐튼) 등 주요 시설을 직접 둘러보며 점검을 이어갔다.
우 의장은 “20년 만에 대한민국에서 열리는 APEC 정상회의는 단순한 외교 행사를 넘어, 국가의 품격과 지방의 잠재력을 세계에 알릴 기회”라며 “이번 경주 방문은 단순한 점검을 넘어 의미 있는 메시지를 담고 있다”고 말했다.
또한 “지난 2월 중국 하얼빈에서 시진핑 주석에게 APEC 참석을 직접 요청한 바 있다”며 정상외교의 중요성도 함께 언급했다.
주낙영 경주시장은 “숙박, 수송, 의료, 경관 개선, 시민 캠페인 등 가능한 한 최대한의 지방 재정을 투입해 전방위적인 준비에 나서고 있다”며 “국가적 행사에 걸맞은 인프라 구축과 운영을 위해 정부의 실질적이고 전폭적인 지원이 절실하다”고 강조했다.
이어 “경주는 이번 회의를 계기로 ‘대한민국의 얼굴’이라는 사명감으로 최선을 다하고 있으며, APEC이 일회성에 그치지 않고 ‘포스트 경주’로 이어질 수 있도록 정부와 국회의 지속적인 관심과 정책적 연계를 바란다”고 밝혔다.
경주시는 향후 남은 기간 동안 철저한 준비를 통해 “경주가 해냈다”는 평가를 이끌어낼 수 있도록 전 행정력을 집중한다는 계획이다.
